Insurance doing CBT?

Ok im getting my first bike soon, and want to do my CBT on it, but will i be able to order my insurance before hand and have it so i can ride it home after doing my CBT (providing i pass) or wont the insurance company except my application until i have done my CBT?

Well, you see the thing is, once you've confirmed insurance with a company, they'll ask for driving documents, such as cbt papers. They'll wait up to 2 weeks and more for these papers. I believe I insured my bike before doing my cbt.

But rest assured, you can do your cbt with your own bike so yes you can indeed. I'm living proof

You, however, can't ride your bike on the road beforehand so an instructor may need to ride it to the training centre. And should you fail, you'll need to get someone to get it back to where you live.

You need to speak to your insurance company. Some will not cover you when doing your CBT.

The girl I did my CBT with had her scooter insured just for the day, however, without CBT the liability was quite high. I think it cost £97 for 24 hours. For £30, I used the school's bikes.

I didn't have to show my insurance company my CBT certificate, I just told them I had a provisional license. I guess they just assumed.

My insurance company were happy to insure me from the date of my 17th Birthday... even though my CBT wasn't till 2 weeks after!

You'll also need insurance for the actual CBT if you plan on doing it on your own bike.

Never been asked for any of my paperwork other than the alarm certificate and to sign a garage clause. I was asked when insuring my ZX6R if my CBT was still valid.

They have no reason to care if your insurance is valid or not until the day when you try to claim as until then all you're doing is giving them a nice sum of money in exchange for a few A4 pages. If your insurance isn't valid then why should they be even slightly bothered as it's not their problem.

Some insurance companies will insure you whatever, but when it comes to a claim you get a thorough ass raping.

I was asked for my CBT certificate pass date. I insured it the day I passed my CBT.

TBH I don't think it's worth the hastle doing it on your bike, it'll just alienate you from the crowd i.e maybe an older less reliable bike, may be faster, may be slower, may have the controls in different places.

Personally I'd do it on the school's bike and insure it afterwards...

If I was you I'd probably use the school's bike. Its only about £15 more. I think your insurance company will insure you if you decide to use your own bike but its about £100 more when I phoned up. I think after you've done it you give them a ring and they charge you what they would if you'd passed the CBT.
Also think about how you'll get the bike to the school as there's stuff like the trailer charge to consider etc.
Anyway, whatever you decide, hope the CBT goes well

Well i brought my bike home yesterday and used our trailer but it wasnt exactly a good fit, and we managed to break an indicator but i looked at it today and have managed to repair it, but i dont want to risk damaging it in the trailer again and as it only cost an extra £10 to use the schools bike i think i will do this.

Anyway, just a quicky. The bike i have bought is a derbi senda r, the guy i bought it off said that down one is first and then the other 4 above are the other gears, so neutral would be between 1 and 2.
Is this normal for all bikes? or are there any senda owners out there that can clarify this for me. Just wanting to know wether or not i will be doing something different in my CBT then on my own bike.

That is normal for all bikes, one down and four (normally five) up.

Thanks for that, one last thing, when starting the bike as it doesnt have a Neutral light on the controls will i have to just have to rememer to tap down to first and then one up to neutral?? as i am assuming it wont go back to neutral when the engine is cut off or anything like that?? Sorry this is probably a really stupid question.

It won't go back to neutral when the engine is off.

You can just pull the clutch in and start it in gear or if you're needing to let it stand to warm up you're best off starting in neutral.

All of this will be gone over in your CBT as it takes you from never havint sat on a bike to being able to ride one on the roads. When've you got your CBT then?

CBT depends on how soon i can book it, i am just waiting for my texiles and gloves to arrive and make sure they fit ok before i do it, already bought my helmet from my local shop, so should be on the road fairly soon really looking forward to it now.

You'll get a feel for neutral when you've done some miles on your bike.

My bike was an absolute pig to get into neutral when I first got it, I think I'm getting used to it now though and I can get it most of the time.

we didn't get taught much about how to work gears on the CBT. Just so you know, down is first, all the others are up. Neutral is between second and first, and you can get to neutral from either second or first.

Not much else you need to know, the CBT should prepare you from scratch.
