Keep an eye out, K5/6 GSXR1000 money.

600RR is not a commuter, good for a blast.
GSXR750 K4 is a good shout, but GSXR1000...

i had 2 of them both brand new when they 1st came out. both bought from Honda in chiswick.

nice looking yes. to ride from chiswick through london traffic was horrendous.
it stalled very easily at the lights. it had little pull until the revs got to about 8 - 9000rpm. by which time your at the next lights and the lady on the automatoc twist and go twisted and left me behind at the lights.

its a good bike for A and B roads - hopeless as a commuter.
when mine went in for its 1st service the then new cbr1000rr came out. the service guy at honda asked me what i thought of the new 1000rr and i said i dunno, never been on one. so he gave me the keys to theirs and said here, take it, whilst yours is being serviced.

i was about 10 minutes down chiswicj high rd and thought - THIS was the bike i should have bought. lots of low down torque - absent in the 600rr, only revs to about 12k but you dont need to go anywhere near that.

it was very forgiving on the gears, didnt really matter what gear you were in, if the bike was moving and the engine turning, opening the gas just made it go faster very very easily.

your grandma could step out her hondamatic shopping hatchback and ride the cbr1000rr. it was a far better commuter bike than the 600rr.

however, it was heavier and that made weaving through the traffic harder.

i eventually gave up on sportsbike for commuting and moved into the world of super motos and havent looked back.

Cheers, chum. That's about what I figured, but unlike Teffers, I haven't ridden loads of modern supersports 600s, so I didn't feel minded to spaff on and on and on about their limitations. Wink

He's had Gixxer 600 in the past. Anything specific that he should be aware of in comparison?

get him to try ( if he s able to ) riding a supermoto through commuting traffic. then hop onto a sportbike and ride the same ride in commuter traffic.

then make his own mind up.

the sport bikes gave me sore wrists and achy back after about an hour, but the sit up style of the sm bikes - this doesnt happen ( to me anyways )
some supermotos have small hard seats so i hear of some folks getting sore bums on them if they have long commutes.

we cant all have multiple bikes but if his main use for the bike is commuting then he should bear useability of the bike for that in mind over other kinds of riding.

maybe a compromise for him would be a sports - tourer but they can be nig and bulky and very comfy ( ideal for long rides but harder to manouvre in traffic ).

he really needs to try a few different styles of bike then decide.

but for me personally, id never use a sports or super-sports bike for commuting ever again.

a friend of mine has a lovely new yamaha r1, was to be used for some commuting in nice weather, its been sat in the garage now for months not gone anywhere and gathering dust after a few commutes, sore wrists and achy back so gave up on that idea and just uses the car.
the problem comes that phschologically bike = sore wrists and achy back - so it rarely comes out for a pleasure ride either now.

GSXR600 and any other sports bike, feels far bigger than the 600RR.

It is like sitting on the tip of a chapel, right up your arse and bent over more than a hooker in a tight alleyway.

Ballistic bike and handling is spot on, but not a chance I'd commute on it.

The GSXR750Y>K3 shape is what I had, large bike and superb performance for little £££.

The GSXR1000 K5/6 is the best bike for ~£4k in my honest opinion. If I had 4k, I'd be aiming for that era GSXR1000 or a K7 750.

what supermoto do you commute on? i've thought about that in past but it's 50 miles for me and can only think of a drz 400, find them bit boring. everything else needs servicing too often for miles i do.

A supermoto is an interesting choice for commuting!

Very fun but lots of servicing required frequently.

Just take whatever catches your eye. For commuting I'd aim for something with good mpg, and that's it. Check your insurance company and look at motorcycles with the lowest rates.

At least, that's how I see commuting. Just to get from A to B at low budget. You can use the rest of the money for something better, just for fun. Thumbs Up

The GSXR 750 is the best of both worlds. Low down grunt with a sense of thrashability the 1000 doesn't give me personally.

Sound stuff, I'll pass that on.

He's been a recreational hooner up to now, and I suspect doesn't want to take a step "down" from the Gixxer. I suggested CBR600F (pre Hornet) instead of RR as a compromise, but he does seem hell bent on going Power Ranger.

Mind you, he mentioned riding everywhere on one wheel, so maybe a supermoto is the way to go. That's certainly an interesting suggestion, thanks.

On my test ride of the 600RR it'd be easy to commute on. IMO it's a 600 and you ride it accordingly, so you rev the crap out of it all the time. I've commuted on 600s before, and it's easy. Certainly didn't have an issue with them being easy to stall at lights.....Penny CoinPenny Coin

yeah on your test ride! - try owning it for a year! - worst bike i ever bought for commuting on.
you cant rev the crap out of it all the time - car drivers - and that includes me - look at you - thinking what is that twat revving his bike like that for at the traffic lights in chiswick high road as though he s at the silverstone start line? - the next traffic light is 100 yards further on.

then because of the riding position - not on just a test ride but in the period of ownership, the sore wrists and the achy back to contend with on top.

it was rubbish. ( for me ).

the cbr1000rr and my current sm just clutch out and then open gas an go - nice, smooth, quiet and easy.

the 600rr would in my personal opinion be an excellent track bike. it wasnt made for commuting in busy traffic.

owning one - and living with isnt like a test ride at all - the bike was boring and hard work and it began to grate on my very quickly.

the 600rr s i had frequently stalled at lights moving off - after a years ownership i gave up on them.

but each to their own - we all like different things - the guy with the money in his pocket has to make up his own mind on it - im only tellin my own personal experience. i was glad to have gotten rid.

hahaha - the bike was rubbish for commuting - end of. it needed a lot of revs to pull away - each time eating away at the costly to replace clutch plates.

i dont sit at traffic lights blipping the gas or revving it ... its not cool or neccessary.

none my other bikes past or present needed this nonsense way of moving away from the traffic lights. was wrong bike for the job.

Inb4 teffers recommends a GS500 as the saviour of modern motorbiking as they only have two cylinders/plugs so are CHEAPER and EASIER to maintain than their 4 cylinder counterparts.

But given the choice of those, a K7 750. The 600RR has the most tedious engine and GSXR600s are everywhere and cheap and nasty.

A 675 is what you want, better than both 600s.

I see what bikersupermoto is saying, but I disagree to an extent. I've been commuting on mine for 3 months, enough to get a decent taste for it.

Yes it doesn't get 'interesting' until 7k revs, but at least I know where I need to put it to get some fun times Thumbs Up

Not sure about the stalling at lights, I don't seem to have that trouble Laughing Just have to give the usual amount of revs as I did with my Hornet really.

I have noticed it doesn't like being started with a hot engine, i.e. turned off after a commute and then turning back on again. Battery seems to want to stutter a bit after getting hot (when engine temp at about 100). Let it cool down a few minutes though and all good.

I like the riding position. Sometimes can feel it on the wrists a little if it's very stop start traffic but bending the elbows more helps. Brakes are very good. Rear wheel lockup is exactly where I would want it. Front brakes very sharp.

Slim bike for filtering. Sounds excellent with a decent exhaust (I will be doing this soon). Quite easy to clean winter dirty off with the big plastics. I was getting to the edge of the tyre on the first day of properly riding it when I bought it, very easy to jump on and get to grips with.

That being said, I've not ridden the other bikes mentioned so this is all just by opinion of my own bike.

But I do get to see this face every day when I get it out the garage and it brings a smile.
