Help! My key barrel seems to be stuck!

It was ok this morning, rode up to parents for Xmas. I turned key to 'off' position. Pushed bike into garage, then I noticed the barrel was stuck. Key comes out, but can't turn on or use steering lock.

Its a bit cold down here, but I tried spraying graphite lubricant and de-icer spray into lock - no help. Might try heating it.

As I need to get home tonight - can I hotwire the lock? Of course I still have the key so transponder will work?

So I think the barrel has mechanically failed?!

I poured engine oil into the key hole when this happened to me... fixed the problem.

Ok seems I can turn bike on now. Looks like when lock is pushed in for steering lock, it gets stuck in. Sprayed a ton of wd40 into it.

You might find pulling the handlebars in one direction whilst trying to turn it will help if that's the case.

Is the key bent slightly?

Try it while sitting on the bike, the angle at which you hold & turn the key will be different when you are standing next to the bike.

The spare key is straight, used key is slightly bent and a bit deformed - maybe it damaged the barrel

WD40 is no good for locks, get some graphite in there before you have more problems.

Yes I know graphite is good for electrics but didn't help it move. Wd40 did help it move, so its getting some of each

had the same problem on me R1, put key in refuses to un lock, turn or even move, no amount of wd-40 ,engine oil or silicone spray helped.
stripped down the lock assembly,

they had worn inside where the key pushes against them as its inserted. so they did not retract enough to allow the lock to operate.

Ground down the tumblers which were sticking out of the lock barrel,
you can see the key in the barrel in jpg.
re assembled with grease works fine now.

I did it over two days
but a skilled mechanic would take 2.5 hours.
I work to the theory that a skilled mechanic is 3x faster than me.

Fixed. Not sure I can be arsed to upload the video I made but it was easier than easy.

However I do not understand how it became "fixed".

After drilling the lock unit from the top yoke, I started to drill one of the bottom security screws, then noticed the normal screws on top Brick Wall This removed the cover and revealed the lock shaft is one peice with a cam and a plastic lobe that pushes the steering lock out.

I tried the key once and it was still jammed, second time, it became perfectly free and fixed Laughing

Also noted that without the cover, the lock barrel and shaft/cam pulls out easily with the key in the off position. Locks are awesome and simple.

There was not a single loose part, not even one part flew off and hit me in the nose. I was quite disapointed in this, having seen Copycat73's picture (note: I will not be buying a R1, or any yam for that matter)
