For the love of fuck why must there be so many plot holes and cheap "deux ex machina" solutions to every story?! I like Doctor Who, in fact I've watching many of the classic eps (currently on the 6th Doctor - episode "TimeLash") but the modern series should be a lot better put together. It's like the script writers don't talk to each other and everyone's completely forgotten what happened in past stories.

Lets take the Daleks:

The first time the Daleks make an appearance in the modern series was with the 9th Doctor; one last lone Dalek that has survived the extinction of it's race. At the end of that story the Dalek commits suicide because being alone it no longer has a purpose or some such.

Fast forward and the Daleks are back. Four of them conveniently arrive from a parallel Universe and unlock the "Genesis Ark" which is a prison ship created by the TimeLords to hold squillions of Daleks. So the Daleks weren't extinct at all were they? Stupid lonely Dalek instead of blowing itself up should have been off searching for the Genesis Ark. That's two errors, 1. the Daleks were NOT extinct and 2. the "last Dalek" was somehow unaware that billions of it's fellow Daleks were in a prison. I guess he didn't get the memo.

All the Daleks end up back in the Genesis Ark safely locked up..

And then the Daleks are loose again, I can't remember where or how and by this point I've rather lost interest. Doctor destroys Daleks, Daleks pop up again.

Later the Doctor gets kidnapped by the Daleks to "save the Daleks" in an episode called "Asylum of the Daleks" in which a Dalek mental asylum is supposed to be sealed by a force-field but the force-field is failing so the Daleks send the the Doctor to the Planet to sort it out because they are terrified of the bonkers Daleks. Why? No idea. Why can't the Daleks just put up another force-field or lock up any Daleks attempting to escape the Planet? No idea. Apparently they are quite happy to pass up a golden opportunity to kill the Doctor though. It makes no sense.

And then we have the NEW Daleks. Bigger and more colorful and a bit more modernized. I'm liking the idea and their voices reverberate in a suitably menacing way. But where did they go? The old Daleks have made at least two appearances since the new generation of superior bigger-and-better Daleks DESTROYED the last of the inferior old-generation but while the smaller old-style Daleks have reappeared the new ones have disappeared without trace. Maybe the models and props were too expensive?

And don't even get me started on the morals and ethics (or lack thereof) of Doctor Who. The modern series in some ways is seriously fucked up in ways that most people are blissfully unaware of. It's mind-fuckery but most people don't think about it. Ignorance is bliss as they say.

It's TV who really GAF?

It's when the public are oblivious to the major plot holes and laughable inconsistencies in current events and past history that you should really be concerned.

I feel the same way about the new Star Trek movies - they are just pandering to modern day cretins who want meme-able shite to dribble on Arsebook about.

Khan was meant to be from India, and as we recall, he was pulled out of the Botany Bay's cryo chamber as a middle aged Indian man (albeit played by a Mexican actor).

In the reboot ('into darkness') he's inexplicably young white dude Benedict fucking Cumberbatch, but still called 'Khan'. Even though both the prime and reboot Star Trek universes didn't diverge until the first reboot movie, it doesn't change the fact that Khan was still put on ice 250 years previously and so wouldn't suddenly metamorphosize and age backwards because of a later temporal anomaly.

But no, have your pretty actors for 'geek' girls to swoon over on Arsebook inbetween games of Farmville because they're totally gamers too LOLOLOL.

star trek & star wars did a very good job of sticking to their own internal rules and logic. As a result stories generally made sense and big reveals were surprising as you knew you had missed clues.

Dr Who clearly just makes it all up as it goes along. not just series by series, but scene by scene. It seems like every time the Dr saves the day by figuring it all out at the last second in implausible brilliance and then does the noble thing by defying all the shows internal rules to wrap things up in the 30s remaining.

I love sci-fi, which is why i hate Dr Who.

Have you never seen a good TV show and though "wow, that really was worth watching"? Some television shows are very good and some of them have an effect on how people think and feel and perceive the World around them. As a character from the movie "Videodrome" once said "television has become the retina of the mind's eye". Doctor Who is important because it is watched by tens if not hundreds of millions of people around the World and it affects their attitudes and beliefs, for good or ill. And personally I usually enjoy a good TV series more than a bad one.

It always annoys me that some hitherto unknown function of his sonic screwdriver will save the day.

It doesn't matter how fucked he is, that stupid green-glowing dildo has the answer.

I stopped watching TV a number of years ago. I'm more than aware of the power of TV on people's emotions, opinions and reactions, especially when it's presented as a story, and it's use as a tool of manipulation. As one hypnotherapist once commented, "To the subconscious it's all real".

Fair enough.

But what if in one episode he converted to Islam, decided to have a sex change operation, wear a burqa all the time from that moment onwards, had massive tit implants, became the emperor of mankind, gathered a harem of 50,000 clones of supermodels, genetically engineered millions of men to become superhuman soldiers and set out on a galactic conquest of millions of worlds, began doing battle with hordes of trillions of alien monsters invading from another galaxy, raped one of his female acquaintances to death and then laughed in her mother's face, furiously masturbated in one particularly graphic scene only available in the extended edition...

and then suddenly in the next episode it's as though he never even converted to Islam and he and his very much alive female acquaintance are solving some mystery on a planet that in the previous episode his superhuman mutant soldiers had conquered that is occupied by a species the alien monsters from another galaxy had genocided in the previous episode....now that would be a plot hole that would piss me off.

Confused

Eh?

Star trek was absolutely horrible for not making any kind of sense when looked at objectively.

Worse, it approached it's self seriously.

There's the Vulcans that always do seem to be emotional.
They break their 'prime directive' all the time.
They mess with time, badly.
And finally they pretty much invented the Sci-Fi Dues Ex Machina.

Firefly for, everything.
Babylon 5 for 'serious'.
Stargate for long standing with lots of guns, space ships (especially the latter ones) and a sense of humour.

If you're approaching Doctor Who with any kind of seriousness, then you're "doing it wrong" and I'd suggest it's definitely not for you!... he had Billy Piper playing a chav as the love of his life FFS.
Why I quite like Dr Who is that it absolutely revels in the sillyness - it makes a big point of the fact that it is NOT serious.

I also think it is very well made, some of the best current TV I'd say - especially some of the horror episodes (though I'm not normally a fan of horror.) While they all tend to have some leanings to the style, I do like they go for such a range of different spacey environments.

Very little back stabbing, very little people sleeping with someone else behind the back of the other person they are having an affair with.
While, yes, people may turn out to be 'goodies' rather than 'baddies' as they first appear, it tends to be very much black and white.

Remember too, this is a series which started off by an enemy that can be defeated by stairs!

Oh and Amy Pond Drooling.

Wait for the next multi-term Labour landslide, and resultant PC fest.

The former will become mandatory under the all inclusive "diversity" policies, while the latter mental gymnastics will become so frequent an occurrence as to make it a trivial task.

Any pronouncement that the story had ever changed will have you laughed at as a "conspiracy theorist", and if persisted in, charged and sent off to to a re-education facility for medication, and "re-education therapy", involving the 24/7 non-stop playing of Rebecca Black's 'Friday' while you are strapped in a padded isolation room, until you are a broken, drooling mess.

Just give it time. Wink

That sums it up for me pretty well. I don't really hate Doctor Who, I love the basic concept of the story, but I hate what they've done with it, it's like a purple Ferrari with wheel spinners and a bodykit. WTF were they thinking?! Evil or Very Mad

Indeed, quite often A Wizard Did It. Actually, TNG begins with A Wizard Did It.
