Morning BCF.

#3 son passed his DAS last month and has been offered this 1997 CBR6 as a straight swap for one of his offroad bikes.

It's 1997, 26000 miles, has MOT til next August.

He's sent me this picture of it, more to follow, but we've not been to see it in the flesh yet.

https://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a229/Yambabe/cbr6.jpg

His bike stands him at about £900.

I'm inclined to think he's getting a decent deal as Biketrader seems to think that £1200 is a base price for one of these, but I don't know a lot about this type of bike.

Sooo - what do you reckon? What do we need to look for if we go to see it, and what is it worth?

Thanks!

If you ignore the colour scheme and assuming it's in good order then it's probably not too far off the price. I paid £1300 for a 1999 with 15k about three years ago but sold it for around £1800.

I'm sure John will take a look at it but just remember to check the condition of the consumables and the exhaust.

Ugly as sin. Laughing Still, paint the wheels and I'd keep it. More reliable than an offroad bike!

Doesn't need to be pretty, it's his first bike and will no doubt be abused if he does get it as he currently has the mechanical ability of a chimp (although he does car valeting for a living so it will probably stay shiny........)

He really wanted a 600 bandit but this has come up and it appears to be a reasonable deal for him.

I would question why the non standard colour scheme. Also the front fairing isn't right for a 97.

A F3 Uk model should have a small grill on either side of the nose cone:

https://www.motoplanete.com/honda/CBR-600-F-1997.jpg

The front looks like a F2 model:

https://s1.storage.2banh.vn/image/2013/09/20130912_27699d9b3c8249cc435cbec264e40e0f_1378976750.jpg

Which would be a 91-94 model.

Something not right about that bike for a 97 model.

Actually looking at the grab rail and rear-light, thats an F2 model so not from 97.

Its definitely an F2 model.

I'd be doing a full HPI check on it and making sure all the paper work is inline before worrying about the condition of it.

Unless of course, it rolled off the showroom a few year late....

Also, what's going on with that exhaust? It doesnt look right for the bike. Can strap is in the wrong place because the angle is all wrong. I also didnt think that CBR's had a 3 bolt fixing for the can? Confused

i wouldn't pay 900 quid for that cbr600 probably closer to about 600 quid. also considering the condition of the vfr750 that was posted on here recently some one bought for 700 quid.

however it also depends on what it is your son is swapping for it. perhaps post a pic of that for opinions of if the swap is worth it.

As above, definitely seems overpriced for an F2 given current conditions - maybe middle of summer.
Wonder if it might be an import - sometimes they get a plate way later than they should.

I think this is the bike he has been offered the swap for, again not sure of the details or worth as it's not my kind of bike or riding!

As G has stated, it might be a import. If the seller insists its a UK model, i've attached a PDF which details the Engine and VIN number ranges for each year of the 600f so you can find what year it is.

I would guess that's a CR85 big wheel, though not that up on motocross bikes (as opposed to enduro etc).

£900 seems likely to be the top end, but will depend on age/condition/recent service work etc.

I think it is, yeah. I know he's looked after it pretty well and not had it that long - not enough places to take it without risking it being seized apparently hence him getting his licence and wanting a road bike.

Still seems a reasonable deal if the CBR is legit.

There is a V5 which we are hoping to get sight of before going to see the bike at the weekend. Armed with all your info hopefully if it's not legit I suspect we will scare the crap out of the lad who owns it!

erm...

that's in no way a 97!

it has 91-94 fairing, the subframe, fixed brakes, forks and mechanical speedo could point to a pre-90 bike.

from what i can see under its clothes it could be anything from 89-94 and as such worth about £500. definitely not 97. i'd guess 91-94 due to fairing but could even be an old 'jellymold' with a newer frock on.

id pay £1000-1200 for a very clean 97/98 (F3) but that is not one.

Ill correct your wording to :-

More reliable than some offroad bikes!

No problem glad I could help.

I wish I had found that PDF when i was buying the CBR I had. Looking at the VIN numbers it would appear the CBR I had was dodgy. Guess I was lucky 2 dodgy looking Poles bought it.

As said, that's definitely an F2 model. Having owned both an F2 and an F3 it's definitely an F2.

Seems to have different clocks to what my F2 had though...

Excellent bikes though. Especially for his first one, he'll love it.

In my world an on road bike = better than an off road only machine.

So much so everyone I know has put their off roaders on road Laughing

I'd trade, but then again I'd not care about whats going on underneath the dress.

But you haven't ridden proper off-road stuff Smile.

Rare that I rode my off-road bikes on the road and usually just to get to dirty areas - most I rode the 300 on road was probably at Weston to avoid getting stuck in the traffic in the motorhome.

But CBR600 > CR85.

I don't even think I'd have problems thinking between that CBR and a CR125. I'd take the CBR and run.

I'll have a go on my 200 soon... Laughing

Always fancied the idea of an 85 with SM rims - basically a pit bike SM, but better in most ways.
You can get around 25hp out of a recent one I believe, that with around 65kg and decent spec compenents, back to the road thing would be very 'interesting' for back lane bashing.

It'd also be a lot better around a mx track than a CBR600 Smile.
