Police
Damn nearly got phished by this:

Comes up at the top of the list in google.

https://visionx7.com/co-oper/login.htm

Asks for the usual sort code & account details, then on the next screen it asks for answers to all of the possible security questions. Whatever crap you put in the fields it then drops you at the real co-op bank main page.

Probably had his browser hijacked by the ninety-tween plugins he's installed from www.totes-legit-sitez.com.

Yeah, but how many of us check the address bar on a site we regularly google, especially if it's at the top of the ranking. What makes this particularly dangerous is that the real co-op have announced changes to how their internet banking works, so a lot of people are going to assume this sites security screen is just the new co-op security screen

Bit unlikely Rodger, I googled using a brand new Fedora installation I only put on the machine last night.

If its ebay/paypal/amazon/banking or anything like that I check it everytime personally Wink

Much safer if you can't be bothered to type addresses in to just bookmark them in the toolbar or something. Still possible they get modified by malware but a lot less likely to get problems than whacking in words and pressing likely google results Razz

If you're relying on Google searches rather than bookmarks/history then you should definitely have something like the Netcraft Toolbar installed (if you're running Firefox/Chrome/Opera...)
It picked up the fake link straight away.

If i click any sort of link or if i haven't had to type in the address manually i always look for the obvious signs, i used to have a few phishing sites of my own when i was abit younger, nothing serious just hotmail, myspace and facebook ones, worked a charm but people are abit wiser to it now days, or so i thought Laughing

I know the URL of mine, it's one I type in often. I don't bookmark it for security reasons. Nor do I save any of the login information in the browser cache. Surely this is just common sense?

My bank always point out that you should never click links sent to you in emails even if they are from the bank, you should always go directly to the online bank URL. The same must be true for Google, I don't trust them not to harvest my information and I certainly don't trust them to always direct me to a legitimate site, especially when it comes to important stuff such as banking.

So then, which is it?

You can't defend googling something using a lack of bookmarks as an excuse when you have previously stated you regularly google it.
