I heavily underestimated how bloody long these take to do!
Some of them are taking me hours and hours to do, because of the essay based questions they have. I'm a bit worried that I'm spending 5 hours on some that I might not even get an interview for Confused
And at the same time if I don't do them well enough I won't get anything at all so there's really no way around it.
Anyone else struggling with this?

You're concerned about spending 5 hours applying for a job that could start your lifelong career.

Diddums.

Well when you put it like that... It's just hard when you feel you need to apply to 20 different places to have a chance at getting in anywhere, and each of those take that long.
Some of the questions I do understand the importance of though, like: Why do you want to work for us.
If a candidate hasn't researched the company at all then it's obvious when they answer the question and they can get tossed in the bin straight away.

I'm with you. All of these stupid applications expect you to take hours and hours filling in all these ridiculous questions like "What was your greatest achievement to date? 1000 words" or "Tell us about a time when you solved a complex problem using unconventional methods - 1000 words"

It takes hours to do them, and to have any chance of an interview you've got to do hundreds - I've done about 55-60 now, and not even had a phone call apart from one guy calling as a courtesy since his company calls all applicants as a matter of course.

It's total rubbish. Do AOSB and go to Sandhurst instead, that's what I'm considering except I'm fortunate enough to have done AOSB before they privatised it.

I'm in my final year of Computing and Management at Loughborough Uni. I'm aiming for a first but will most likely end up with a 2:1 (that's what I've put down as my expected grade on all my applications)

Are there many jobs around in the graduate scheme? Well enough for them to come to the uni asking for graduates?

I decided I don't want a job in IT so I'm applying to business related jobs.
So far I've done:
Toyota
Jaguar Land Rover
Royal Bank of Scotland
Deutsche Bank
Tesco
Morrisons
Bloomberg

and I'll also apply to IBM, Lloyds Banking Group, P&G and maybe a few more.
Then if I get absolutely nothing I'll apply to some smaller companies in the summer.

Rolls-Royce? Not far from Loughborough either so getting to interviews in your final year won't be a hassle.

I'm so glad to be fortunate enough not to have to bother doing any of these applications, the applications for placements were bad enough. My classmates are getting so frustrated with the application also, you're not alone.

Ahahahaha you'll need to do more [applications] than that!

I've got a first class degree and I speak 4 languages. Yet even the Metropolitan Police turned me down for their graduate scheme. I suppose that was because I don't speak Arabic.

Sad

If I've got nothing by next summer I think I'll do Sandhurst.

I'll say it again, do AOSB, it works well at giving you an idea of what kind of person you are as well as potentially offering you a career as an army officer. No obligations if you pass. Although they've privatised it now and I hear it's a nightmare.

Army cut-off is 26 though, right?

Just when I started thinking I might enjoy that lifestyle, I got too old.

Pays OK.
Perks OK.
Hours Ok.
Close to home.
Sounds like something easy to do.

Well that's easily answered then Laughing

As graduates. You should be well used to churning out 1000+ words, where the rest of us would make 10 do Karma

Yeah i most definitely need to do more than that.
I don't know about army stuff cause I'm not from the UK…
Also on a side note I'm fluent in Swedish and Spanish which will hopefully give me at least a tiny advantage over someone who doesn't.

I think the cut-off is 36 for a lot of stuff?

I always think I'd enjoy the military lifestyle, but then I remember it wouldn't be like Apocalypse Now and would be more like... well, lots of marching and being shouted at and keeping things overly tidy and needlessly polishing boots and generally doing stuff that would drive me utterly insane. Oh and the political chess games which would probably lead me to great levels of subversion, depending on the nature of the battle.

Which is lucky really because I did apply to be a Navy pilot officer a few years ago and failed Laughing .

Kids these days... might have to spend FIVE HOURS writing to get a job - too much effort.

Complains they can't get a job.

Spending 5 hours writing to get a job is fine, it's when you're applying to 30 places and therefore spending 150 hours to MAYBE get a job, when exams are 2 weeks away (my fault for not getting on this earlier)

Yep! Very Happy

In fairness they told me to reapply in 3 months, which is quite a short turnaround since most applicants are told to come back in 6 months or a year. I never went back though, and at some point morphed into the armchair activist hippy I am today. I'd be happy to join and do think I'd be alright as a soldier, but only for the correct cause.

Anyway thread derailing now over.

Svedebo, put your back into it!

I got "invited" to do the next stage in the selection process for Morrison's and Deutsche Bank, which were a situation test and numerical reasoning test respectively.
When you get to the stage of doing one of these do you think that means they've looked at the CV etc and said that's good enough to do the next thing, or is it more a case of the tests supporting your application to make you more or less viable?
