After my father had used the poor thing to commute on for a few weeks a head gasket finally cried enough.

Or chisel and pry the heads off with a screwdriver? Thankfully they can be salvaged. Some of the damage can be seen near the water outlet on the refinished head.

I had a budget of around £1000 before cleaning the PVs and they've now blown a big hole in the budget. It was 50/50 on replacing them anyway, but I'd rather the decision hadn't been made for me. Crying or Very sad Laughing

I only wish I could get the engine out off the frame whenever I need to work on it. Crying or Very sad

Found three of these. They're the thrust washers that hold the small end bearing in place and there should be four of them. Shows just what a ham-fisted spastic the previous owner was.

This is going to be replaced. There is very little play in the bearingsand it's within spec, it didn't make any noises while the bike was running, there is a little rust on the left hand bearing but it would probably be fine to use as a replacement or spare. PM me with an offer if interested.

The orange stuff will be permatex copper gasket sealant it's good stuff when used correctly.

These products are only bodges when used in the same way as shown in your stripdown photos. Gasket compounds used in the correct manner are quite legitimate methods of repair and are used widely by the major motor manufacturers.

Your quote of "I've no idea", is most apt in this context and until you at least gain a basic idea of the properties and uses of these products you would be well advised to steer well clear.

I'm not a bodgy cunt either, but I have used these, and other gasketing materials for nigh on 50 years now since I completed my apprenticeship in 1965, with very few problems, and I continue to use them where appropriate.

You'll be using some yamabond or equivalent on the crankcases of the RGV! Wink not quite like the last owner did tho! Look forward to seeing the rebuild progress! Are you fitting kit/RG 125/ fitting drains to the power valve covers to drain the usual spooge build up whilst it's apart?

A cheap Chinese Ebay £10 special screen arrived this morning.

It looks a bit younger, and slightly less like a chav's handbag, plus the fairing can be used for it's intended purpose as I can see through the screen.

Aye, noticed that when reading through the manual. Wink The covers would be useful as it'll be covering a lot of miles and it's a pain lifting the covers off. I may modify the standard covers and turn a bung up on the lathe, just for something to do.
