Hi I'm new to the forum and to CB500's. I have searched for similar problems to mine but I can't find anything that helps. Hopefully somebody can Smile

So I have a 94 CB500 which I'm new to and the speedo stopped working the other day. I thought it was bound to be the cable, checked it found it broken and ordered another. Fitted the new cable with no issues and expected it to be fixed. It wasn't.

With the cable disconnected at the wheel and flicked round with a screwdriver the speedo needle bounces a little in one direction and not the other which is what I would expect.

I took the speedo drive unit off today and cleaned it up to find small strands of metal within the gear system which I think is nylon so not sure where they came from. Both gears still seem to engage fine and the unit seems to work fine on the bench.

With the unit held on to the wheel and the wheel rolled along the drive unit output does not turn. I think the two nylon lugs on the drive unit gear have been worn down and don't engage with the two metal lugs on the wheel bearing/seal.

Is anyone familiar with these lugs or this problem and could describe/explain this to me before I go and buy a second hand unit which may also not be in great condition. (I can't find a new one or parts)

Hope this isn't to long or dull and that someone might be able to help

Thanks

Just in case anyone else has this problem it was as suspected worn down plastic lugs on the speedo drive unit. Got a second hand one off eBay, it's lugs where much taller and now speedo works fine.
