I've had post-chistmas moment of horror where I've stood on the scales.
I've decided there are two good ways to tackle this problem:
-Cycle to work, although it's a bit dark and cold on morning at the moment.
-Swim. I'm really good at swimming, I seem to have the top-heavy build required. I just find it boring to go up and down, up and down for an hour or so.

Which should I invest in? A cheap hybrid bicycle or some sort of waterproof iPod arrangement?

Or should I just give Pizza Hut my credit card and get myself a Rascal?

I'm sorry, but I don't quite understand what you mean by 'less'? I like food. I'm keeping it. All of it!

Does your girl/boyfriend/life partner know about this? Confused Wink

That is, and I'm making a big assumption here, if your sex life isn't a solo effort. In any case I'd get some ointment and/or lubrication.

This is on topic, sex is exercise if done right Very Happy

Cycle to work if it isn't too far. That way, the exercise will kind of be a secondary thing that happens in the process of you continuing with normal life. That's my favourite kind of exercise - the type where you get fit without it feeling like a chore, because you're combining it with something else anyway.

Having said that. I've been running three times so far this year. Hopefully gonna keep up with it...

I use Runkeeper to track it, it's a free smartphone app that measures pace, distance, calories etc, and records the route on a map so I can marvel at myself later. Try it, it's really good Thumbs Up

I struggled to do more than about 20 lengths before I got my waterproof MP3 player, with it, I can manage 50.

Don't know how or why it works, but it does

Swim. I found being able to listen to music really helped with the boredom and it's GREAT for fitness.
Mrs Browntrousers cycles 6 miles each way to work but finds it doesn't help much with losing weight as tend to be concentrating on getting to work alive and not in a big ball of sweat / rain depending on the time of year, rather than getting heart rate up etc.

Cheers

Sex is the only exercise I'm really doing at the minute. Unfortunately it's accompanied by a take-away a little too often.

I'm not too sure if I like the distance to work, it's only ten minutes in the car, but it's NSL roads...

Swimming is the preferred option, although lane swimming at the local pool doesn't start until 9pm most nights.

Which MP3 do you use, Northern Monkey? I'm thinking if I stick on an audiobook the time will fly by and I had the entire works of Terry Pratchett in my library.

That's a fair one actually - cycling isn't great if it's all flat ground or not a long journey. You'd only burn about 30 calories per km. But yeah it does depend on the terrain so it's your call OP.

If you can get into a good routine and find one of these magic waterproof MP3 thingies, it does sound like a good shout because swimming is a massive all-over workout.

It may be worth having a look on google earth to see if there are any alternative routes you could take to work for cycling,

Most councils have someone in charge of non-vehicle routes such as bridalways and cycleways which you may find suit part of your route.

If you choose to cycle to work it's best to do one or two days a week, say tuesday and friday so your body has time to recover in between without you feeling nackered.

as time goes by you can increase to mon, weds and fri if you wish.

But it does get rid of excess fluid.

I'm sure if I was offered a half hours dirty sweaty primeval rutting with a beautiful woman instead of cake or that extra portion I'm sure I would rid myself of that spare person I carry around with me, but it would mean having a session 48 hours a day.

Yeah they seem to be the best ones on Amazon. Never had a problem with any Sony gear I've bought before, so might give these a go.

Swim anyway, try and vary it a bit by seeing how far you can go underwater (my old place had a fairly small pool and I would do lengths underwater). It really is an amazing workout and I miss being able to go and do it whenever I please. Stuff the boredom, you'll get into a groove and the time will fly.

I walk home from work sometimes, which is about 8km, takes me just over an hour depending on how how fast I feel like going. I just did it tonight, in fact, and last time I weighed myself I'd lost a bit.

I agree with the exercise machine suggestions, if you have a place to put one and there's a machine you'll enjoy doing while watching movies or listening to music.

Buy smaller plates.

Turn the heating down.

I've tried exercise machines thinking they're going to be a miracle cure, but they're expensive and just end up gathering dust, due to my lack of willpower.

I've heard the smaller plates thing, seems to work quite well. Can't turn the heating down though. I'd much rather be cold than hot, so if it was up to me I'd set the thermostat at around 15 degrees. I live in a three-storey house though and I'm on the top floor, so if I'm at a comfortable temperature it means my housemates on the ground floor have frosted over.

+1 for cycling to work.

I used to live 7 miles away and it was perfect to cycle to, not much extra on the day and I've never been in better shape.

Now I live 20 miles, it's too far and I'm getting fat. Laughing

Google maps tells me it's 6 miles, should be fine. I'll give it a few weeks though, don't fancy starting off in knacker-numbing conditions.

I just get to work early (6.30) and work is at a Uni where there is a gym so that's a bonus then workout before work.

I want to start swimming too because that is epic.

I like the idea of a exercise bike at home, ride a bike while playing playstation or something and have a little dynamo giving you some free electrickery too to boil the kettle for the next pot noodle!

Find a gym, a couple of miles away, walk there and back every day, eat less!
You save on gym fees and food bill. Thumbs Up
