Saw this new article about electric buses with wireless charging. I'm excited by the concept, but concerned about the implementation. I wonder how many of these wide and long manhole covers there will be.

Fingers crossed, they will only be in areas specifically to buses.

MAG / BCF are all over this, right? They have been running local campaigns specifically about the issue of slippery hazards, to be fair.

Good point, well made.. never thought about this kind of issue.

Surely if its wireless they could chuck some of that grippy road stuff they put at certain junctions on top.

I agree, it would be handy if most drain covers on the roads had the tarmac on them. That would make life so much easier.

However, I wonder that, although they're wireless, it could be 'direct wireless' similar to infared, rather than the type of wireless you'd use on the laptop for Internet.

No, it'll likely be magnetic (half a transformer in the road, the other half fitted under the bus).

It does say they're only at the end of the route so I'm guessing they're at a bus depot or waiting point somewhere rather than randomly placed in the road along the way. Unlikely to be riding a bike in the bus depot!

Why have a £500 plug in system at the start and end of the route when you can spend £500k on a system that doesn't work as well?

Like an electromagnet in the road which, yes, induces voltage in a coil wound around a ferrous core that is fitted to the bus.

Already raised slippy concern with Local Councillor on twitter about it, told me to take a look at the first one installed about 3 miles away from me.
Most bus stops have "pull ins" in MK so shouldnt affect too much, although this first one is on a residential street

Something I do almost every day!! I'm more worried by diesel and oil spills which are less visible.

This system is at the moment implemented at a specific terminus where the bus can safely wait for 10 or more minutes such as a turning circle. In the picture you can see the yellow paint which means that this is at least a marked bus stop Not likely to affect your route in any way. Like all new technologies it will get smaller as time passes. Don't forget that this is experimental for now.

I wonder how much pollution is caused by making the batteries in the first place..... considerably more than would be offset maybe?

Would surely depend on their life. A bus is built to last for something like 15 years so that investors get a reasonable return. I'd want the cells to last at least half of that. Yes there is this to consider but Blakey won't give a toss as long as the price is right.

The funny thing is most of the buses in MK were about 15 years old anyway, seems like a shock to the system brand new buses.
