VFR800 Cutting out while riding. Now won't start.

So I bunked off work a little early and nearly made it to the north circular when the vfr just cut out while I was doing 30ish in 2nd. It would start while rolling so pulled over and tried again. After a couple of gos with the starter motor whirring away and the fi light flashing it started again. I got about 200 yards and it cut out again. Now it won't start at all.

I'm waiting for the breakdown people who should be here "within 2 hours" but I'm bored. Any ideas what the issue is (I'm thinking reg/rec) and how much it'll cost?

Fuel pump? Dodgy battery connection? Ignition relay? Dodgy wiring?

FI light flashing is usually a code, a sequence of long followed by short flashes, the longs representing 10s, the shorts representing 1s.

The fi light doesn't flash when I turn the power on only flickers rapidly when I try to start it.

Got picked up by some poor sod from SOS recovery who had to schlep all the way from Essex to drop me off in Chiswick during rush hour then go back home.

No idea what the issue is but hopefully will be able to speak to a mechanic about it tomorrow and get told it is a cheap and easy fix Praying

Dodgy wiring seems to be the answer from Chiswick Honda. The positive cable from the battery had melted taking the fuse box with it. Less than £100 to replace. Now to wait on the part being delivered and it being fixed....

The question is WHY? It's either had a short circuit or been over-charging and if that isn't fixed, it'll just happen again. Wires don't just spontaneously melt, there is always a reason, it was carrying way more current than it ought to have been.

I would be making sure I test the reg/rec is keeping a hold on the battery voltage.

haha was about to say - you could push it along the road to chiswick honda - top guys in there - diagnose in blink of an eye!

bought 3 bikes from them!

The bike is currently at Chiswick Honda for them to do the work so I am hoping that they have diagnosed properly and won't leave the bike to fail again. Presumably if the bike does fail for the same reason after they have 'repaired' it I would be entitled to take it back for again without paying for making good the work?

yes - but only if they fitted the replacement part wrongly which knowing chiswick honda is highly unlikely

however something else on the bike could fail, or the replacement part could fail.

ask them whats the warranty provisons on the work they have done.

The part is on order and isn't predicted to be in before the end of the month. Fortunately I am going to America on Saturday so being without a bike isn't that bad. Do wish they would give me a loaner of one of their new bikes though but they won't let me do a day long test ride.
