Chain needs replacing. It's got a hollow link (soft link) fitted at the moment.

Seen lots of riveters on ebay but no idea of quality.

Anyone got one they can recommend?

It's not the cheapest one on there but I bought one of these:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KM500-DID-Style-Chain-Splitter-Riveter-Motorcycle-Quad-/200893850861?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item2ec634e4ed

Done two chains with it so far and can't imagine it ever failing at it's job, probably outlast me Smile

Hi

For soft link the cheap ones are probably fine. I have a cheapy which came from M&P which does the job, and the same tool is sold with numerous brand names (one like this).

For the harder links then a Whale tool is probably required.

All the best

Keith

You can use a centrepunch to widen the rivet on a soft link, but it leaves you constantly worried that the chain will come apart...

Handy to know. May I ask where you get the pins from?

I've been using one of those since the mid 90s, broke the largest pin, never replaced it just used the mid size pin ever since, but now I wipe an angle grinder over the rivet to remove most of the head before using the tool. I reckon it's done about 15 of my chains and 4 or 5 when lent to other people. The pin normally breaks when lent out, but everyone so far has kindly returned it with a new pin.

I bought one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171079220068

Instructions are useless, but the kit does the job nicely.

I made mine for nothing out of an old G clamp, 2 large bolts (M24 and M12) and a centrepunch.

you need a pair on molegrips to push the link together, place a lump hammer behind the link then twat the ends of the pins with another hammer

proper tools are well expensive, the team I worked with paid £180 for their chain splitter and rivetter, and it gets used once a month!

Exactly what I've been doing for the last 20 odd years. Never had a chain break yet (touches wood).
