Over the Xmas period, I hardly used the bike. I went to fire it up and had a flat battery. Fortunately I live on a hill so was able to jump start it - took it for a long run up the M1 and it seemed OK. Alas on the Monday no power - called the AA & basically the battery was shot - it would not charge or hold a charge.

I got the battery replaced, they checked it was charging OK and got the bike back. 48 hours later - same problem - flat battery - refusing to hold a charge which was blamed on a duff battery as everything else seemed OK. Got a second battery and same pattern, except the bike started misfiring during the journey and spluttered and died and had no juice in the battery to restart.

Just before that happened the orange engine light came on and I noticed the number 46 appear....which according to Yamaha is something to with the charging system - anyway - my bike shop (the excellent Bob Thomas in Finchley) are stumped so wondering if anyone's had the same problem or know what the cause is.

The bike's also just had a service and is idling normally.

Will be enormously grateful for any help! Very Happy

could be something breaking down under load or heat. reg/rec and alternator stator windings are favourite. could also be the plug from the alternator to the reg/rec - these can overheat , melt and cause a bad connection.

I guess they check the charging for a few seconds having just started the engine

I think if it run for a time and the charging checked you find it is not

Either the rec / reg is failing or the Alternator winding are shorting when hot

Neither exactly common but far from un known

Thanks to you both....I have spoken to the bike shop and they think it could be something to do with the fuel injector pump, overwhelming the electrical system and draining the battery. It is s staying in overnight for further checks tomorrow! Twisted Evil
