So a friend of mine, managed to get his proof of no claims for his first year of biking the other day (6 months late). He didn't get it earlier as the company that he is insured with currently, didn't need proof for 1 years no claim bonus.

His proof of no claims document came in the post yesterday but for some reason says "Number of years entitlement: 2 years" even though he hadn't even been riding for 2 years?

Is he being stupid or does this mean they have a record of him riding with no claims for 2 years, and therefore after this years insurance policy ends he will put down 3 years no claims even though he did his CBT less then 3 years ago so couldn't of been riding?

I see no reason not to try his luck. Tell him to amend his policy to two years no claims, send off the certificate and wait. Thumbs Up

That's what I thought, but I said he should wait till his current policy lapses to not arouse suspicion. And if anyone asks say he was given the documents and that's all he known.

How legal is it if you "didn't know any better"?

They gave me the same wording after my first year of driving.

I currently have 5yr NCB... nothing has been queried, ever. Laughing

That's often the case....Until you submit a claim.
When you do, they will turn over every stone looking for a get-out clause.

It's not Paddy's fault stating what it says on his cert, who is he to question the insurance people. He had a crash and he might not be too sure how many years he's got so he just trusts the professional body of insurers ... Cool

You may be confused here Billy.

You have a bit of paper that states 2 years no claims.

When you took out your current policy you stated 1 years no claims.

At the end of the current policy you will get a piece of paper stating 2 years no claims.

You can't add different bits of NCB together - otherwise people starting out could run 5 policies on cheap scooters concurrently to get 5 nears NCB. It only works cumulatively.

Unless he calls current insurer to say, actually I have 2 already, they then give him 3 at policy end?

He says the proof of no claims came that is already in his hands says 2 years. It's quite possible something messed up somewhere or such like.

In the past I have had some issues when transferring bike no claims to car - having 5 years no claims but only having car licence for 2 years, say. Got it sorted in the end.
Should be noted that you can insure a vehicle before passing CBT - you might want to, so you can do the CBT on your own vehicle.

Interesting Thinking
I'd always thought they'd be a problem insuring any vehicle that you're not licensed to actually drive/ride.

Bit like it's damn near impossible to insure a vehicle that doesn't have your name on the V5 (although I'm sure someone will say they've done it no hassle).

Yep, never had a problem. Seen a few that have had a problem. "Let me talk to someone who's educated past pre-school then, please." or just going to a better insurer will both work Smile;

I insured my lorry before I had a lorry licence (so I could use it to practice in) and was insured on a car before having my car licence as many are. I suspect it's less common with bikes, but have seen enough people doing CBT on their own bikes, so can't be that hard.

The insurance would be valid as you would be accompanied by a DSA qualified instructor and therefore riding within the terms of your license. (I did this when I did my CBT...although I did have to ring around 3 or 4 different insurance companies until I found one that would actually do this.)

As for insuring a vehicle without my name on the V5...never had a problem. Most of the cars I've had have been in my wife's name as she normally picks them (she works part time so it's easier for her to pick them up).

You're right, I do have a piece of paper that states 2 years no claims form my last insurer that I was with for 1 year, my current insurer thinks I have 1 year no claims, shall I call them up and say i made a mistake, it was 2 so I get 3 years come may? (If I don't crash)

Worth pointing out that a NCB/NCD of 2 years does not mean two years without claims...

Some insurers offer a free 'year' for new drivers/riders. Some insurers offer 1 'year' for a 10 month policy.

I expect your mate got the free year without noticing.

I doubt it, only because they would advertise the hell out of that, it was with Bikedevil and there's no mention of it on their website, I like to think it was coincidence/luck Laughing

Bikedevil aren't an insurer, they're a broker, who was the actual insurer?

I'm assuming here then she's on as main driver with you as a named driver.

In that case then I'd agree the insurance companies would have no qualms taking money off you.

The situation I had was trying to insure a bike so I could be main rider but name on V5 was someone else.

They're another broker! If you ever find out who the actual insure is then let us know, because 2 brokers getting their cut and still being cheap sounds worthwhile...

I couldn't find another company attached to them so sorry I don't know?

Bike Devil just mentioned Oddie Dalton on the bottom of their page by Oddie Dalton don't mention anyone.

Lucky guy haha it saves me about £200 a year from next year. And oh yeah I forgot to say Embarassed it was Alpha insurance.
