My brother is after ditching sky and wants to add basically smart TV functions to his current TV.

So what are the PVR options out there that can say stream as well as do the normal duel TV recording stuff.

I have no idea whats even out there in this area.

Cheers guys.

There are tons of android devices ready for that matter. They even sell sets with remote controllers and stuff. It gets from around 30 pounds up to 100. Thumbs Up

I do recall a thread on here that said you could get a NOW box and reprogramme it with Plex to be a smart box. That doesn't get you a PVR though. Found thread - click here.

I have a Samsung PVR which being the same brand as my TV so the remotes work each other and the interaction between them is excellent as it changes the TV settings for optimal display depending on the media being played... Basically use the iPlayer app and it adjusts, TV, HD TV (free view HD), or blu ray.

The PVR can cost the same price (ours did) to be a blu ray AND PVR.

However for streaming etc the you view box's can be a better interface with the scroll back and forth on the TV guide and anything in the passed that is available on the main catchup services would be available on there.

We replaced our old $ky with a "skybox f3s" off of amazon for 80 quid.

Very good features especially when bought with a free subscription to a card sharing service! been very happy with it.

Probably illegal tho.. Shocked

YouView (Humax version) or a Humax freesat box

YouView box will allow you to use your phone (Android or IOS) to set recordings if you remember something when you're out.

If he wants to surf the internet while watching TV buy a laptop/ipad/android tablet.

I think for plain old usabilities, the you view system is very good - if not the best, especially for catch up services.

My Samsung PVR offers some amazing capabilities like acting as a WiFi extender that you can link WiFi devices too, record 2 channels and watch another live channel depending on the spectrum of what you are recording. Obviously there are all of the tv apps like Netflix.. 4od and iPlayer. Plus the smartlink thing with the TV I mentioned before. Then it has a blu ray drive and all for about £300 this time last year. Down sides are that every now and again it does shit it's self and need restarting.

However, in hindsight I would have gone for the you view system based on real world usability. Regardless of additional features on my Samsung.

Seems happy with it, only down side is that it will only play certain files over the network.

I've not been to have a look at it and see exactly what it will play and what things it will stream yet though.

I know ps3mediaserver doesnt work with it though Laughing
