From watching the local training school, I maintain their bikes, I would say it is a very variable thing
Some listen do and learn other have difficulty
those who have ridden or driven for years can have real difficulty un-learning bad habits
I see exactly the same as an IAM observer some pick up the ethos and techniques easy others find it hard a few never get it
It is down to you
Read the books and talk to schools but better spend a a little time and money and pass than try to short cut the training and fail
It will cost more in the long run

You'll need to do theory, so get that out of the way.
You could then do A1 mod 1 on your own 125 for the princely sum of £15.50 and treat it as a practice. It's only going to be easier on an A2 bike.
Heck, you could do A1 mod 2 yourself, even if you intend to go via a training school for A2. Again, it's the cheapest way to get a real practice in, and if you pass it, you'll be able to go to a training school and say "Look, I can do all this stuff, I just need to do it on a bigger bike."
If you're that confident, buy your own A2 bike with an appropriate piece of paper if needed, insure it on your provisionaL via Bikesure (and perhaps other) then find a legal way to get it to the test centre and do the tests yourself.

Only some insurers, and the amount varies wildly. It only gets pennies off for me, it's mostly of benefit to younger drivers/riders with huge premiums. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
