Did them having the deposit send you overdrawn?

If so, then you should have chased it more quickly, or planned better. I think you've done yourself over, although I would be asking the rental place what the hell's going on.

yeah..exactly. I rang the bank straight away and they said they would not charge me - then they charged me Mad I'd like to know who had my £100 for a week to do with what they want.

last time I rented a van, they just took a note of my card details but didn't remove anything. However, just to make sure, I made sure there was funds to cover the deposit on that day, but when I took the van back, I took them funds out. Because the £100 went for a week, I got done over.

You need to know who you spoke to at the bank that said you wouldn't be charged. That'd be my first port of call. Then speak with the rental agency and ask them when the payment was sent back.

Invoice the rental agency while asking nicely for your bank to refund the charges.

Rented a van with Enterprise last weekend. They took (and removed) £200 as a deposit, which they refunded a couple of days after I returned the van. The delay in the refund was due to me paying by debit card rather than credit card. All was explained clearly before I drove the van away to be fair.
(I must have been lucky and got them when they had an offer on too. £20 per day as opposed to £50 odd. Happy days! Unsure why they wanted a mobile number and TWO landlines, but for £20 a day I didn't object too much.)

Whenever I've rented before, they havn't even taken anything out - just hung onto my details.

I used to work for a tool/plant hire business. We used to always take a card or cash deposit. Cash got returned as soon as the stuff came back, but the card could take up to 10 days to be recharged.

I don't know why this was as we did the recharge at the till as soon as stuff was returned, but we did tell punters this may be the case before they paid at the beginning.

I think it'll be cash next time - presuming they give that back on time - maybe they'd like to borrow that for the week too Very Happy

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I doubt they'll accept it as the deposit....

Some hire companies don't take a deposit swipe if you pay extra to bring the excess to zero, if my recall is accurate it was about £7.50 a day last time I did so

The thing is if you were involved in an accident it could be weeks before they establish who is to blame, and you may even have to make a claim to get it back if you weren't at fault.

I do know it takes longer to get the deposit back using debit cards

Sure. Imagine that you collect on customers' invoices instantly, but pay your suppliers 1 month late.

That's a month's interest you're generating on all revenue. Irrelevant on a per customer basis but scales up.

Right now, if you gave me £10k and I gave you it back next month I'd be £15 or more up.

You are ignoring the length of time any items have been held in stock, and loads of other shit.

Yes, intentionally, because I'm not talking about those things.

Simply that if you push back repayments you can profit on the interest.

It doesn't mean that it's a good idea if your customers grow wise and leave, or that it's always logistically possible to pay in a rapid timeframe anyway.

If you simplify things too much, you create bollocks. The store will not be making any money on that transaction.

The banks, on the other hand...
