So, the one time I wasn't wearing earplugs, I was riding home from work.

On the way back, I notice a slight rattling noise, as if I had an uber slack chain. "funny", I thought to myself, "it was fine on the ride in this morning".

I was almost at the gym where I was headed to, so I carried on. Got there, and hopped off, had a look at the chain, expecting it to be a bit slack. As i'm wiggling the chain, the whole rear sprocket moved!

Turns out, the nuts holding the sprocket on had somehow rattled loose and come off. The bloody thing was on with just 2 bolts. Thank god for the underseat tool-kit.

Used a spanner to tighten it up as well as I could and nursed it home, no hard acceleration or braking. Got it home. But blimey, has anyone had this happen before?

And any tips to stop it happening again once I have new bolts (other than using a torque wrench) lol.

Had the same on my bandit. Wasn't quite as bad as the bolts had only come loose rather than falling out.

Happened to me too. To make matters worse, the loose nut began to foul the swing arm and bent the stud as well. Thankfully, I was changing the chain, sprocket and rear tyre anyway, so replaced the stud at the same time.

That said, my sprocket wasn't moving at all, as it's mainly held in place by a big circlip on the CG.

hmmm, not as rare as I thought. So a dab of loctite should hold them right?

They're pretty pricey for a set of nuts lol. Egay is approx £25 and thats for the anodised tat. The originals seem to be a bit more.

In fairness, I find earplugs tend to make the high-pitched, clattery noises more noticeable.

And yes, nylocks. New ones. They generally come with a kind of locking-ish nut but after a few times being done up and undone, any pretence of them actually locking goes out of the window.

Is there a lot of play on the cushdrive that could be giving them a hard time?

Don't they normally have tab washers like this?

I know that is a front sprocket but all the ones I have seen on the rears have tabs like this to prevent them undoing.

70mph is enough to damage your ears after 10 or 15 minutes.

Not an issue if you don't ride often but if you commute for years on end it's certainly something to be aware of.

No that wouldn't work cause of the axle lol

You can have this type on the nuts though

I have never seen that thing in my life. What is that? Does it sit under two of the sprocket nuts?

I wear the ear plugs because even though I don't do motorway commuting, the exhaust can is loud, and my hearing is shit anyway, and I don't want it getting worse. Besides, I find its nicer to ride with them in, and I feel less tired when I get off the other side. There's something about constant wind noise which is just tiring!

Yeah but TBH I think I've only seen it once. Better just to make sure your nuts are tight nudge nudge Wink Wink

You should get some ear plugs that protect your ears but don't mess up your hearing.

I bought some of these yesterday and they are *really* good.

had bolts come ever so slightly loose before on my 125 rear sprocket, that was likely me not doing them up tight enough though as it was my first chain and sprocket change i'd ever done
