I made two characters last August after a friend nagged me to come and play.

I'm sure my character is having a whale of a time running around the colourful worlds having adventures, but I'm just sitting here watching and occasionally hitting a key or clicking to tell them what to attack next or how to attack it.

I felt the same way about Guild Wars 2 and indeed Dragon Age - you're almost completely disconnected from the action, you just give a few commands and then that's it. If it used a text parser, you'd just be typing 'CAST FIREBALL REPEATEDLY ON KOBOLD UNTIL IT DIES'.

I realize almost all games amount to pressing buttons to direct your character, but I'm too used to pulling the triggers to shoot bullets or hitting a button to swipe my sword. I barely feel involved here, and it's not even like an X-COM game where I'd be constantly issuing orders. I can sort of understand the appeal of keeping track of each spell's cooldown and casting them again and debuffing enemies but it still doesn't feel like I'm down there as my character - I'm sitting in a UAV-style control chair somewhere else, watching remotely.

Oh, Warcraft. My one true love. Can't remember if I ever posted about it here. Nostalgic grandpa story to follow.

I played on and off since Vanilla. Dropped out of sixth form to play it (raiding in a top end guild during BC), then went back deciding that throwing my life away for a game (no matter how fun) probably wasn't worth it.

For a while I played on and off, unsubscribing every now and then. Mists of Pandaria release was when I absolutely nailed it. I had 11+ level 85 characters for professions. 4 or 5 90's, I don't remember exactly.

That was when I really discovered the Auction House. I'd had a go before, but didn't really get in to deep. Anyway, over the course of a few months, I ended up utterly dominating the server economy to the extent that no-one could buy anything useful except from me. Hit gold cap and then some, had banks and banks full of ridiculous amounts of stuff I could never use, the lot. 2nd wealthiest on server I thought (against a guy that had played the AH 'calmly' for 7 years as opposed to my concentrated effort over a few months).

Eventually I had to quit because the game became my life, I would spend 16 hours on the game, sleep for 4, wake up to refresh auctions, sleep for 3, then go again (food breaks somewhere in there).

In hindsight and when explaining it to others, it's difficult to explain why that would be fun, why amassing pixels in a game would be worth it.

The simple matter is that the social aspect was just too great. When you're well known on a server, moving away is difficult. You could compare it to permanently exiling your friends. You know full well that outside of the game you'd never speak to these people, that you don't really have anything in common but the game.

The simple fact is, it didn't get boring, and I wasn't dependent like an alcoholic or a smoker might be, it just became destructive - I knew that continuing the hedonism and 'fake celebrity' would mean that once Warcraft ceased to exist my life would be a complete crock of shit.

Giving away the gold was great fun, though. Tried to sell it for RL cash (worth roughly 3-4k) but frankly the game masters would have nabbed me on day 2.

I've forgotten the exact wording, but to distill the essence of what kept me playing, here's a quote from a dude in global trade chat.

Quote:
somedude: Derivative, the Mitt Romney of our server

Without knowing the game too much that probably doesn't make sense. Essentially though, my method of generating profit was fairly literally to gouge everyone on everything. Imagine if eBay was the only store you could buy anything from without calling up random friends. Now imagine that someone bought every single Xbox 360 and relisted them at double the price. That was basically me in Warcraft.

On the actual mechanics of the game outside of the economy.. I lost interest really at some point after the Burning Crusade. Playing around was fun but raiding became more and more simple, dumbed down. Gear handed out for limited effort, raids available on 'easy' difficulty, that sort of thing.

The next expansion is touting the ability to buy a level 90 character for actual money. To me that's a signal that Warcraft may well be heading down the dodgy path of countless games, nickle and diming, not realising that telling people they can Have It All for $20 or whatever makes people think of their time in game as a very low paid job rather than a fun excursion.

yep!

ive been playing since December 2006.

I started just before the burning crusade came out, i think my hunter was lvl 22 and he was a night elf called wooizm on the realm Darkmoon Faire!
Didnt realise that role playing actually really meant role playing as that was the realm i was on and it was crap at the time for raiding.

Then i made a mage called wooism
I joined a guild that was good and fun and we raided SSC, TK, Kara, BT and MH.
I left that realm and transfered to the realm Silvermoon which was the best move ever as practically every guild there had good raid progress......i couldnt believe my eyes because there were so many people in full tier 6....i was amazed as my old realm only had 2 guilds at the time that were wearing tier 6 on Darkmoon Faire.

When i left Darkmoon faire i missed the guild and friends such as Jakey, Samanthaxx, Aldonza, Hairsonz, lol...........
also on realm transfers you could only take 10k gold with you so i donated about 6k gold to the guild and gave the remaining 5k i think to Jakey

I am a 90 mage now and i will never give wow up, i dont play it as much as i used to, so i am social member in our guild called Chilled.
so now i mostly do looking for raid and quests on the timesless isle.

The new expansion Warlords of Draneor has actuall pissed me off but i will still play regardless
only pissed as it seams that blizzard are being lazy and just giving us recycled content "we have already done out in BC, Garosh going back in time to change history and create an alternate timeline is stupid, cos if he could do that then so could Kiljaden....blizzard really!!!"

They really should make the end of the expansion have a cinematic as the start has and they should stop being laxy and just using ingame graphics!

Death of illidan in game graphics.......................Lazy!
Death of the lich king in game graphics............lazy!
Death of deathwing in game graphics..........lazy!
Defeat of Garosh Hellscream in game graphics........lazy!

The amount of money that wow makes they could at least put the effort to do cgi cinematics as there cinematics are absolutely AMAZING!!!
Ive been impressed with them ever since diablo 2 let alone warcraft 3 and wow

anyway if you ever come on give me a shout on the Silvermoon realm names Wooism lvl 90 Draeni Mage

id rather play wow than follow that shit they call football!!!!!

it deep when your playing wow and you can hear the guild leaders kids asking for a drink and her screaming at her hubby to get a drink for there child. i was like wtf. but i guess we were fighting a boss lol

the social aspect of wow is probably much better than alot of things as everyone on wow has the same interest as you as you enjoy playing the game and progressing.

the weirdest thing i ever so in wow was when i was travelling in Goldshire and went up inside a tower and saw this night elf man and woman have an argument lol
the whole thing came up as text on my phone and i was like wtf.
he was telling her shut up and sit down and she actually shit up and sat down on the chair, evertime she tried to argue back her character stood up and was then told to sit down which she did lol......that was some wierd shit.

I played once for a few minutes round a friends house, seemed boring a shit but I knew deep down that if I continued to play I would get hooked.

Pretty much every person I have known to play World of Warcraft has become obsessed so I have not ever even given it a chance.

im playing but im close to unsubbing again.

simple fact was, i used to play in vanilla and tbc with a large group of friends and it was a blast. quit when wrath came out and didn't touch it at all for 2 years (then subbed for the odd month now and again to check out the content)

came back this exp. as a few of my old mates said they'd be playing again. 12+ became around 3 very quickly and they're all pugging their heroic highmauls but i can't bring myself to do it.

i played the game to have a laugh with the guys and i can't stomach the attitudes of people in pugs so im not going anywhere fast.

because of that its turned into log in, check follower missions, set new ones, log out. whats the point.. only reason im still playing at the mo is i've just capped my pally and its a load of fun (lock and druid were always my 2 chars) but other than that.. im fading fast

I dabble on Wildhammer, been on/off for the last few years. It gets too repetitive to quickly and as a casual gamer I can't compete with the hard-core nerds that play it.

I've been playing a lot of Hearthstone though, very addictive. I'm not usually into card games but I enjoy the battle of wits.

Can be repetitive, especially if you're stuck farming normal / heroic dungeons.

Don't have to be hardcore to compete, I only play 2-3 nights a week for a few hours, mainly just for the raid nights and I'm pretty much capped for gear apart from Mythic content which we don't do and probably won't since the new raid will be released soon and we've not got enough players for the Mythic run either way Smile

I play although am considering stopping now. I played quite heavily up until and during Cata but MoP lost my interest so I quit raiding and now I'm just not that fussed about it. I like the garrisons in WoD and almost have a full epic follower team - things like that are sadly grabbing me at the moment. I'm finding plenty that I want to get done even without raiding.

I've played for too long.

I signed back up for WoD and played for a month. The leveling was certainly more fun than it was in the past expansions. My PC broke at he beginning of December and I've not felt the urge to go back since. Gearing up as a tank was getting really repetitive. I think they deliberately make Tank drop rates low so they have to run dungeons more and lower the DPS queue time.

Garrisons were interesting but are too much like social media type games.

with queues of 20+ mins for dps on my battle group i'll have to disagree with you on that one. (and the fact once my pally dinged he got half his tanking gear on the 1st runs and NONE of his ret gear at all)

still could be worse.. could be queuing for ashran Neutral

How much worse would that queue time be if tanks didn't have to run over and over for their gear though? Sounds like you got lucky with your tank gear!

I recently subbed to max a few chars in readiness for the new expansion. I will probably give it a few months and leave it alone again.

not for a long time.

every couple of months i log into my bank char to keep guild master active (he is level 1 so i can login without a sub) but other than that, nope.

not interested at all in the new exp. might play it a few months after release to see the content but other than that i have zero interest left for wow.

sucked too much of a fun out of it for me.

I never played WoW, but I used to be absolutely hooked on a 2D MMO called Tibia. I poured thousands of hours into that game, I knew everything about it and when somebody worked out how to host your own server, I built my own from scratch including all the maps and quests.

Eventually I forced myself to stop playing after I left school, but always went back and played a bit here and there.
Then, they changed the rules. Gamemasters were all sacked and rule violations would be submitted directly to the banhammer of the game's creator.
I decided that during some free time, I'd buy a month of premium time. Played for an hour or so while talking in game chat, went "Right, I'm off to go turn on my cave bot haha" and promptly logged out. Account banned for a month. Six appeals, they just fucked me off after I'd played for around nine years. Never went back on.
And now I know I can't play another MMO or I'll get addicted again.

yep im still playing and currently doing Hell fire citadel on heroic

looking forward to legion as this whole alternate timeline has enabled me to see characters who were dead now alive like durotan, grom hellscream, guldan

shame about velen and marad tho....

Seeing shadowmoon valley and taanan jungle(hellfire pennisula) before its corruption is amazing
nagrad almost looks the same

finally got my money game up to 350,000 gold lol
i think money wise this expansion has been the best in that sense

the cgi seqences have got so much better and the film warcraft should have been 100% cgi but based on the warcraft 3 story line (worry about other story lines later)

im still a mage called wooism on the silvermoon realm

dunno why but the other classes haven't really appealed to me even tho ive got a death knight, rogue, hunter
