Our cheap and nasty plastic garden table is upside down to stop it blowing away. It has collected rain water and today we have sub zero temperatures so (obviously) the water has frozen. However, as the photo's show there are shards of ice protruding upwards.

They are rock solid, embedded in the ice and none of them are caused by drips from anything above. They seem to have risen randomly from the ice blocks in the table. Weird! Can any one explain please?

Thanks!

There must've been shards of ice floating about after partial thawing, then a further stronger freeze lifted them, it is odd to see a significant number have done more or less the same thing.

They look smaller ice cube sized - more spikey than shardy, and it suggests you usually need distilled water?

Rain water is similar to distilled and tends to be very low in minerals. Most of the contaminates it contains are picked up in the atmosphere.

No shit, they're smaller when the "cube" is smaller.

On another note, this is properly cool, and something i need to go try out.

It looks like junkies walk past your garden and throw their syringes into your upturned garden table.

I was going to summarise as I had this discussion with a colleague quite recently, but there is a pretty good wikipedia article which details how they are formed:
