Hi folks
I am planning, well consulting with my wife, my first ever trip that's over an hour away from home.
So far all my riding consists of wondering around roads and country lanes where I live.
So my first trip will be heading over to west coast of Ireland from Lincoln.
Now I know where I'm going and how to get there etc, my biggest concern is the bike. It has never let me down or anything like that before I just haven't driven/ridden anything that old for that long and was wondering if it would make it or not.
I suppose I should tell you want the bike is
Suzuki Volusia 800 (03reg)
So its coming up to 11 years old, it only has 16k on the clock.
As far as know (and I know nothing) it runs fine, well she starts up each and every time, no blooms of smoke, no funny noises that I can hear.
But there's something in the back of my mind saying I shouldn't attempt it on something that old (I think this might stem from a car that blew up on me on the same trip).

Basically would you do it?

Give the bike a full service and it should all be good.

Without a second thought, any planning or any servicing. I would put fuel in the tank and go. Might check the tyre pressures if I was feeling particularly paranoid.

Get some AA cover (my AA cover for my car covers any vehicle I drive up to 3Tonnes), put petrol in, go.

Damn beaten to the punch!

Was going to say my 10 year old bike took me from Cornwall to France, but you've beaten me with seniority Thumbs Up

Do your basic checks (Tyres, levels, lights etc) then go for it.
Given the miles you've likely covered already locally, you would have suspicions by now if something was "off" with your bike.

Even if it does expire massively somewhere in the Irish boonies... is it really such a problem? Bit more hassle to get home than if you were 50 miles up the road, but otherwise...

What were you wondering about these roads?
Or did you mean Wandering?
Also I think you meant Plumes of smoke.
I'm so glad I went to school

I did a 280 mile round trip, (took 5 hours, embarrassing i know) on my cbf125 which was pretty much being maxed out most of the way and it was fine.. i didn't even service it, just filled up with petrol and off we went.

Also, one of my brothers friends had an old cbr600f, late 90's not sure specifically what year it was and went to France from Birmingham and it was fine all the way there and back, so a 03 with relatively low mileage should be fine.

I really wouldn't be concerned. If you're that bothered just service it and do a general check over the bike.

Hi

You do not drive a motorbike are you sure it covers your bike. You actually ride a bike but drive a car or van.

I take my 1990 bike all over europe, quite often on a weekly basis.

I think nothing of doing 500 miles a day on it.

If your bike works every day doing 20 miles it should do 100 miles in one go without problems.

Hi

For someone who went to school they (the teachers) did not succeed in teaching you much.

I have just looked back to see how clever you really are at your previous postings. "dont" I think is don't and you do not get 3 pints for traffic offences.

If it was a private school maybe a refund is in order!

Have you ever travelled an hour away in a car?

A bike isn't any less reliable.

My bike is nearly 15 years old and in 2013 I took a trip through germany, austria, czech republic and Hungary, then took a second trip around Spain.

No problems, no worries. Easy.

glad you took a look I like to get people thinking
and I had more than 3 pints for my traffic offense.
No but really we can all make the odd typing error but so many people dont know how to spell in the first place.
Wander and wonder, the "a" and the "o" are not even near each other on the keyboard

Check tyres and oil level...then go. The bike has done no work at that mileage.

I wonder if people need to be so pedantic. Someone asks for a bit advice and the thread turns in to a lesson on how to use the English language correctly. Ffs (abrv).

Hi

Spot on with this comment. Does it matter? No it does not and that is why I pointed out to the person that tried to give such a lesson, that his own posts are far from perfect.

I am really sorry if I poked a bit too hard. I did not want to upset anyone. In the future I will keep my gob shut about spilling and greymar.
I'm alright really just get a bit anal about the standard of our education system.
Like I said I'll keep it to myself in future.
Am I forgiven? (pretty please)

So basically according to the general consensus I should go for it. And I will.
I'll let you know how I get on.

As for the spelling, yes I am useless at spelling, this comes from teachers trying to hit it in to me instead of teaching me. So I have grown up knowing how to punch hard and where to punch.
This hasn't stopped me building a life for myself and doing quite well in the end.

I can now build computer systems that control call centres and route data around the world. The fact I can't spell I really dont give a shit.

Before going to Spain I had new tyres put on, pumped up ad checked oil. That was it.
