So my understanding is that we got rid of the proven Sea Harrier and will replace it with the F-35B.

Even though it has been widely known to be inferior to Russian and Chinese fighters.
Just how much more money will be wasted!!!

Additionally, the new carriers, while they will have the capability to carry 40 F-35's, will in practice only carry about a dozen.

We're building these Nimitz-size ships and they're going to be carrying fewer jet aircraft than the Invincible class.

My source for that is a video that was on the BBC site yesterday that I can't find now. The BBC website search engine is incredibly bad even when I type in the exact name of the article I want...

Oh, and did you also know that Babcock gave a 20 year old student £500 to design an aerial surveillance drone, with GPS capability, autopilot, and everything you'd expect on a military drone. He did it within his budget.

I can't find the exact source I had found before, about the Royal Artillery using a hand-launched drone and it's unit cost of £50,000, but here is a similar drone used by the US military that costs $35,000 per unit plus $250,000 for the system.

https://www.army-technology.com/projects/rq11-raven/

A £500 drone being sold for upwards of $35,000.

Shocked

why not use the typhoons? at least we already have them, granted to decks on the carriers would need a bit of work but at least we have a decent plane to use.

I have to admit I do love the look of the sukhoi 47, sadly it never entered mass production

It's still going to be superior to the Harrier, and the Typhoon isn't designed structurally to land on an aircraft carrier.

I'm no expert on this kind of a thing but a Pak-Fa is a fighter and, as the video said, is likened to the F-22. The (admittedly slightly old) EU version of this is the Eurofighter. So UK PLC does have something. So if you're gonna get mad about something, you should be shouting something more like, "Why do we have Eurofighters?!" But that's silly because I thought Eurofighters were supposedly alright?

The F-35 is more for versatility and, I suppose, aircraft carrier operations. The hint is in the name - V/STOL - Vertical/Short take off and landing.

Really I'm not hot on all this at all, but I think comparing an F-35 to this Pak-Fa and getting mad is a bit like comparing a rubgy player to a football player.

Also, F-35s are better than Harriers because there's more computerisation and presumably a large amount of the engineering etc is greatly modernised.

Also BAE Systems are a subcontractor on the production of the F-35 so at least some work gets done on home turf. Buying one of those Pak-Fa things would be like... well I guess it's sort of theoretically like buying weapons from your enemy.

More interestingly, BAE are now working on their own UAV program.

It's highly probable that in 15 years the majority of aircraft flying from these ships will be drones. The removal of the harrier was a pure cost effort and due to the RAF brass being listened to over the navy brass.

The harrier while slower than the Tornado which is being replaced by the Typhoon anywayhad a longer remaining service life with the GR9 and better serviceability rates. It was originally planned to fly harriers from the new carriers for a few years and phase across as the new F35 came into service. I suspect the first aircraft to land on the deck will be a Dauphin or a Merlin

I was under the impression the F35 was never designed as a dog fighter traditional fighter.
Designed to be hard to see on radar, more of a get in and get out aircraft being unseen.

Evading deadly modern surface to air missiles which these days cannot be evaded so easily when they can pull significantly more G than a manned fighter jet.

The key is not being seen at all.

Quote:

In real terms, F-35 is as stealthy as a pink elephant in the porculan store, far less stealthy than Saab Gripen, Dassault Rafale, F-16 or Eurofighter Typhoon. While it does have comparably low radar signature from some angles and to some frequencies, as well as good passive sensor suite, it is severely lacking in two most important measures of visibility – visual and infrared

It's not, in the same way the Typhoon was never intended as a ground attack aircraft.

France pulled out of the Eurofighter project and built their own specifically multirole, carrier-capable aircraft in the Rafale. HM Government considered them over the F-35 but dithered back and forth between the B and C versions thereof instead.
