Busy refreshing my very aged desktop system with some hand-me-down internals and I'm currently toying with the idea of replacing my trusty 5400rpm death star with something a tad quicker for the c:\ drive. Given that my last real foray into system building was back when 6GB of memory was considered to be overkill, I'm rather out of touch Laughing

In short, is an SSD worth it on an oc'd Q9450 in a P35 DS3R board? If so, any recommendations? Budget is very tight so looking firmly at the low end of the market.

Your motherboard is limited to Sata2 speeds (3Gb/s)

Even if you buy this Sata3 120gb Crucial SSD it will still work but just at Sata2 speeds.

I have this.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Technology-120GB-2-5-inch-Adapter/dp/B00A1ZTZOG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390290574&sr=8-1&keywords=kingston+ssd

I wish I did it sooner, the difference is stupidly obvious.

So not worth buying unless you have a motherboard to match its speeds?

My motherboard only has the 3GB/s bus. You have to set it up right when you install it so it runs at uberspeed (something in the bios). It just makes everything load faster. I turned on the computer, sent a short text, looked up and there was windows. It used to take 2-3 minutes to boot.
The loading bar on programs and games just might as well not exist since it fills so damn fast.

Yes it is worth buying even with a slower SATA connection on the motherboard. 3Gbps is about 300MB/sec after protocol overheads. Some SSDs can do sequential burst reads and writes at speeds above this, but HDDs aren't that slow at sequential reads and writes either - you'll get close to 200MB/sec on a modern high-density bit of spinning rust. In any case 300MB/sec is more than fast enough for most of the times that you need really high burst read/write, outside of scientific data capture or silly file-copy benchmarks.

Where SSDs really win is random access, where your PC is trying to access small bits of data from lots of different places. SSDs are 20x faster at these operations, and it's where they make all the difference. And these are not bound by the SATA interface speed because they don't get anywhere close to 300MB/sec.

Heh, I'm still at the "can I really justify the cost" stage right now - supposed to be spending money on the house.

Cheers for the feedback all Thumbs Up

I thought a lot of the performance improvements from SSD came from the random-access improvements - so I'd have thought you'd still see a decent improvement in a lot of things even without

I had wanted one for a while, but ended up getting one a year ago when my main HD died and I needed a replacement IMMEDIATELY.

Made a significant difference to boot up time and certainly quickened up a few other areas.

SATA II is like 300mbps, still much faster than any HDD. Thumbs Up

does your board run sata natively or as ide/enhanced mode?

Some boards are not fully sata like most of the g41 boards, this means no ahci mode, no native trim etc.

Not enough of a problem to kill the benefits of ssd but still something to think about.

You would need a pcie sata controller in those cases to get the best from an ssd, you can still use the on board controller for optical drives or for your storage drives.

They're still too expensive for too little storage to make any sense to me just for faster load times.

I agree that ssd's are expensive for the size, but at the same time magnetic hdd's are getting to be cheaper for the size compared to a few years ago meaning you can afford to have a smaller main drive.

when people come to me with laptops that need new drives I will say get an ssd, mostly because the average laptop doesn't have a big drive from factory so a 60-120gb hdd will often suffice and will be fairly cheap in those sizes, but also because of the inherently slow 4500 and 5400rpm drives that they are replacing means you will feel the difference more, the old drive can be fitted into an external enclosure for extra storage.

Desktops are harder to justify unless you intend (and know how) to divert your default folders to a slave hdd and install programs that do not benefit from the extra speed of an ssd on your second drive, or are planning on getting a large 256-512gb but even then you would not want to fill it up with your video and music collection.

UltraDMA/66 or go home! Very Happy

I run a 180gb main boot and program drive plus 2 x 4TB main data stores for video and "stuff" (*pron, stolen MP3s yada).

I take it all back, SSD is awesome, I am now going to start replacing all my HDD with SSD, wow, that is all!

However, from my reading, there are big differences between available SSD's which resulted in me spending about £20 more than the cheapest.

https://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/kingston-ssdnow-v300.html

Read through that link, particularly this page, https://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/kingston-ssdnow-v300_4.html#sect0

It made me buy one without the sandforce controller, in fact I bought a Plextor M5s 128gb from ebuyer for about £73 with free next day delivery.
