well after a few years of faithful service my sony xperia active
has finally given up, the touch screen stopped working,
i replaced the screen but still no joy, must be the motherboard

ive had a cursory look
and all ive managed to find to suit is the ngm explorer

which looks better in some ways -
dual sim,
Magnetic sensor (Compass)
Barometer and altimeter
tele atlas maps
1780mAh battery compared to 1200mAh

but worse in others 800Mhz processor compared to 1Ghz
Size: 126 x 65 x 18.2mm compared to sonys 92 x 55 x 16.5 mm for the same size screen
weight 212g to 110g of the sony

and you can open a beer with the active, also the price of the NGM is 300 odd quid, compared to 120 quid out of hk or 200quid out of the uk

so is there any other smart phones out there, that can compete?

bare minimum requirements
must have a light, must be smart, no bigger that 4" screen, wifi, gps, etc etc

basically a solid smart phone that can go under water, not just dipped

The Xperia Z is being marketed as "waterproof" here.

I've got the Xperia Z1 apparently it's waterproof with the doors closed on the ports. Don't think I'll be trying anytime soon though because it dosnt look convincing.

i kind of like the look of the defy, but its quite old now,
id like one thats a bit more rugged that the xperia z's
they look like if you dropped them on an edge that they would just shatter

I'd be interested in waterproof also. I have a dog and walk him for about 90 mins every day, I also use this time to make calls

I often have to bag my phone when out and use headphones to talk.

what ive found is there are basic waterproof phones and the "tuff"
phones

these are
Utano Barrier T180
Cat B15 : probably one of the best for the price
JCB Pro-Smart
NGM Explorer
RugGear RG220
RugGear RG960
MTT Smart Multimedia
Casio G zOne Commando (ace looking phone)
Hummer H1 (chinky phone covered in rubber)
Discovery V5

.....water proof/ less rugged....

Samsung X Cover 2 (nice normal looking phone)
Sony Xperia Active
M.T.T. SmartFun
Toughshield R500
Galaxy S4 Active
Galaxy XCover
DG68 4.1" (generic waterproof chinky phone)
Fonerange Rugged V8 (a bit of both, chinky but good)
panasonic eluga
motorola defy
Lenovo A660
Kyocera Hydro C5170
Haier W718 ( it has numerous copies MTK6572W)
motorola moto g (quad core, budget price)
sony xperia z

there are a pant load more as well, most that are named after 4x4's are just chinese shit covered in a plastic/rubber running basic 2.3 android software, and bare bones processors,
i like the look of the casio, and the Kyocera and Haier phones look nice and low key

so much to choose from Shocked

The Xperia Z is waterproof and it's awesome. Only this morning I was using it whilst having a shower, how's that for multi tasking!!

It's the best phone I've ever owned and I've had various Sony phones before, each time they increase in awesomeness.

Stamina battery saving is handy. The camera is excellent. Everything about it is excellent. You should buy mine so that I could upgrade to the Xperia Z1. Razz

Quite a few Sony's are waterproof.

I want a Z1, but a couple of days before that came out I bought a second hand Acro S which is similar, but older, so a bit smaller (4.3").

I specifically wanted one of the Sony ones because some also have Ant+ receivers (sports sensors like heart rate monitors).

I too could also be interested in selling mine (was gutted to find that for what I paid I could have got the newer phone) Smile.

Samsung S4 active is waterproof too.

I found out last weekend that my iPhone 5 is almost waterproof... Dropped it in the toilet and it kept working for five minutes after. Followed this with 48 hours in a bag of rice and it's working just fine now!

just to update, ive decided to give the Haier W718 punt
its a bit bigger than i wanted, with a 4" screen, but it has a dual core 1.2GHz processor
its also dual sim, which im not sure how useful that will be it might be good as i still have my nz sim card,

the only downside i can spy is that it doesnt come with the play store installed, so il have to root it straight out of the box, which is kind of annoying,

But for £60 delivered, id be a fool to complain Wink
i'll let ya know how it goes when it arrives

If it doesn't have play store, try installing aptoide instead, might work out cheaper in the long run...

just had a look at that other store,
it looks pretty budget,

there are ways to get google play store on it, so not too worried,
just gay that it doesnt come with it,
considering how big a company haier is

quite cool, its waterproofness leaves alot to be desired,
i used to go swimming with my xperia active, cliff jumps from up to 20meters into water, and never showed any signs of water ingress

but the 130quid for the moto-g is really well priced for a decent brand
with a quad core, but not having an sd card slot would annoy me,
and only 1 gig of ram?? decent processor bugger all ram

Huh? 1GB of RAM is quite a lot for a phone.
Flagship phones have about 2GB.
I'm not sure why you would expect more from a budget model.

My Nexus 5 (with aforementioned 'ridiculous processor, 2.3GHz quad core) has 2GB.

because they chucked in a quad core processor, and a fairly decent gpu, if it was a dual core or single core then 1gig would seem to be enough, its like they made a fairly high spec phone but didnt quite follow through, id rather more ram and less processing power

It's a trick, though. The processor is 1.2GHz.

Basically it has half the CPU power and half the RAM as a Nexus 5 for half the price. Sounds about right to me.

1GB is still a ton in a phone.

The only obvious compromise in the MotoG is the camera.
It's just upgraded to KitKat and some changes have been made to the focusing makes it quicker to lock on.

You want the 16GB version though, I have that and there is already nearly 6GB on it which would be concerning if there was only 2GB left.

well update time,
ive had the haier w718 for a few days now,
its actually pretty good,
a few shit things first
-the back cover and a pissy seal are the only thing making it water proof
you could drop it in the water and leave it there and it would be ok, but i doubt it would stand up to a washing machine, (shame really because the rest of the waterproofing is good)
-the camera is shit, no flash, crap quality images,

good things
- price (much cheapness)
-it came with the play store which was a bonus but a few roms are available anyway, and its super easy to root
- fast, surprisingly so for the price, the bench mark i did gave me the same if not faster than a galaxy s2 in most areas
-battery life is awesome, 2000mAh battery, and i still havn't charged it from opening it out of the box, so far thats 4 days and it has about 30% power left, i havn't used the gps, but ive been online for atleast 20mins each day, and have atleast 40mins playing suduku daily,
-recentish release of android. (4.2.2)

all in all i'd recommend it, if you just want a bare bones phone, and don't want to spend alot of money,

For the record I'll happily put my z1 under the bath, no signs of leakage.
