I've bought two "pre-registered" SH300s - that is, as a second owner but less than 100 miles.
I got decent discount - closer to 4000 than 4700 list price - and two almost new bikes.
The first bike was as new.
The second looks like it was bought, the owner tried it out on the motorway, decided it needed a screen, took off almost all of the plastics, drilled the headlight plastics to make a homemade screen (to get access to the threaded holes for the Honda screen option), then decided to give up on it and clumsily put it back together, sometimes using the wrong bolts in various places, sometimes replacing the bolts with almost equivalent versions. I had the drilled plastics replaced by the dealer at no cost, swapped around the screws that had been misplaced using the older SH300 for reference, and ordered new screws to replace the almost equivalent ones I discovered later down the line. A few mounting tabs on the fairings were snapped by the ape who took it apart, but this is slightly more forgivable as Honda fairings are usually very tightly fitted with a lot of redundancy in the tabs.
I reckon the guy who had it before me was a bit of a nutter. The owner's manual had been ripped apart, with all the non-English sections ripped out, the Italian and Spanish entries in the contents inked over with a marker, the translations of "Owner's Manual" on the front similarly inked over. The guy seemed to have a pathological hate of the continent.
He also put tipp-ex on some of the control buttons on the handlebars, so that things like the kill switch didn't just have debossed icons, but white infill debossed icons.
So give it a good look over to find out anything odd, and haggle the dealer down / get them to fix anything that's weird. But it's unlikely that the previous owner was as much of a nutter as mine was, and you'll just get a good price on an as-new machine.
The downside, of course, is an extra owner on the V5. But if you intend on keeping the machine for a fair while, this isn't really a downside. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

Yup, I bought a car that was registered to the dealer, delivery miles, no problems, healthy whack off the list price before haggling. It made not a jot of difference to the price when I sold it on.
A bike, well, be wary about CBFs that have been ridden for 3 days... ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

The second bike you mention here seems to have been second hand rather than pre-registered. A pre-reg is something the dealer 'bought' to make their sales for the month/period and would have bugger all (delivery) mileage on it never mind any modifications. |

For only £300 extra (or even £400/£500 if you take off the top box, which I will likely buy anyway) I could get an almost new one. |
For £300 difference between new and used I would want more than a top box to convince me to by the used one. |
Exactly, plus 0% finance on pre-reg so I wouldn't have to lump out £5,000 in one go to avoid interest. In fact if I did finance on the £4,700 used, it'd be almost £5,000 anyway. Although there are other used ones costing 4k, 3.7k, 3.1k and 3k.
Have no idea what to do. ____________________ KTM RC390 -- Kawa ER6f -- Yam YZF R125 -- Yam YBR 125 |

If I wanted another ER6f, I'd buy the 3k one. That's still expensive enough to expect fairly good condition, save for consumables like tyres, chain etc.
I sold my old one for 2k at 55k miles and a few scratches on the fairing and stator cover. Bought for 3k at ~30k miles, and in the time I had it the chain and sprockets were replaced, valve clearances done, fork seals replaced, downpipes replaced, probably 4 sets of tyres, many litres of oil changes and a half-dozen oil filters, brake pads, etc. - probably over 2k in total spent in two years.
But especially for a first big bike, I'd buy second hand. How comfortable would you be with a total loss - have you priced in comprehensive insurance to protect against that? I could afford to buy a bike 4x as expensive in cash, and not have my life be visibly affected, but I wouldn't spend that much until I'm fairly sure I'm at a skill level where I won't crash when riding the way I want to ride.
In other words, I wouldn't want my fear of crashing (and the attendant loss) stop me from riding the way I want to.
You can buy a lot of bike for the kind of money we're talking here, and an ER6f is a budget commuter. It's a lot less well made than my scooter, much less my VFR. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4
