I will get the full license, bought the books and dvds to help me along Ive been looking for a bigger bike to make good and fettle with till the summer, trying to stay around the £600 mark, am I dreaming?, any recommendations, looking for easy to service reliable and good fuel economy as it will replace my cg to commute on when i have a full license.

last year i did my CBT, theory, Mod1 an a few lessons then ran outta wonger

i have a bike waiting for me to pass too an to make matters worse i sold my CG so i cant ride anything about at the moment

i'm aiming on Febuary to pass though

Bandits are regarding as boring etc, but are pretty simple. I got mine for £100 it runs & stops (ish) needs a few bits n bobs like tyres. but i think Bandits are known as "beginner" big bikes aint they?

I have got 70 MPG from my CB500 so if it's good economy your after you wont go far wrong with one of them.

However, it's getting quite hard to find a CB5 for reasonable money now unless it's an absolute shit heap.

I would reccomend the ER5 instead. Very similar bike from what I gather but can be had for a reasonable price. I think I recall seeing an 07 reg with very little miles (less than 10,000) advertised recently for £1000 so I'm sure you could easily get an older one for £600.

Good luck with your tests also, the feeling you get when you hear the words "Thats the end of your test. You've passed" is pretty good.

In my quest for the cheap first bike and my liking for the er5 I came across this down the road, not sure about that milage though, are the er5 shims or tappets, is it worth a punt?.

You could scrape a decent CB500 for little more, if anymore than the ER5 if you look about a bit. Might not be quite as cosmetically nice as that one looks, but i'd rather a CB personally.

I haven't owned one, but having ridden a couple of bandits I found them fairly okay as a beginner big-bike, unless they're prone to mechanical grief and thats the reason so many dislike them on here I wouldn't mind having one as a first bike either personally, can get them dead cheap - maybe thats for a reason though

I'd bet that ER5 linked is an ex school bike..... 1 owner for 11 years and engine bars. That said I'd buy it if I was looking for a commuter type thing I expect if you appear with cash you could get a cheeky offer accepted.

Don't pin yourself down to a specific bike at that budget, get something that broadly fits your requirements and isn't totally knackered.

A £600 middleweight bike is going to similar to ride to another other similarly price middleweight bike, all have the potential to be reliable or to be utter dogs. Once your down to that sort of money, any special characteristic of a particular bike (reliability, economy, power, handling, brakes) will be dulled by age, mega miles or a lack of maintenance.

Whatever you do get, keep a couple of hundred back to fix the things that are going to go wrong in the first month. Something always goes wrong in the first month.

That fazer seems quite expensive, I'm sure you could get a decent fazer (maybe not quite as good as that one) for about £1,500.

Regarding the training school bikes. I'm not really sure why everyone makes a fuss about them to be honest. As someone else has said, a school will have had the bikes serviced by an actual mechanic at the required intervals and not by the home DIYer who might not really know what they're doing (me).

Not sure about whether the ER5 is shims or tappets, I know the CB5 is shims. No doubt a quick search will reveal all.
