Okay so I've been looking around for a new bike and came across a 2001 Aprilia rs125 extrema for only £800! Now I'm not expert but Apreilia's are pretty pricey but I've been told they are also a money pit so would it be worth buying or staying clear of it?!? Question

The guy says the only issue is a loose throttle cable and nothing else but Its only done 10,000 miles... that doesn't add up considering my lexmoto is 3 years old and its done 7500.

I have no idea what to do because Ive dreamed of having enough money for one of these and this guy just happens to be selling it for £800... Oh and he payed £1000 for it in September... Confused

Hi

A lot comes down condition. Being 125s they tend to be owned by learners, who are learning how to ride / crash / maintain a bike, and they are likely to have got it wrong fairly often.

Look for a leaking rear shock, rust on the fork chrome, crash damage, worn bearings, play in he suspension linkage, worn brake pads / disks, etc. Also bargain on fitting a new piston (I tend to do the rings at 5000km, with a piston every other set of rings). A top end rebuild is fairly easy (gentle afternoons work).

All the best

Keith

aprilia 125's are popular with learners as they want speed and performance, and no thought goes into it past this point

it will blow up at some point, the reasons being the power it produces and the need to thrash it to make it perform, therefore the wear and tear on the engine components is accelerated over something like a four stroke, the engine is firing twice as often.

to avoid engine failure, a regular mileage related plan of replacing pistons, rings and at larger intervals the crank bearings will be required, and if you can't do this work it's going to cost hundreds to fully rebuild, this is the price of speed and performance

Thanks guys, I'm going to give this one a miss! I'll just wait for a few years and buy a bigger one as a track bike.

A 2001 125 aprilla has been

1) caned until it's about to blow or
2) caned until it's about to blow and been rebuilt (ad finitum) or
3) is pristine condition as it's been in a garage wrapped in a 13 tog duvet since 2001.

For £800, my money isn't on option 3....
