 |

Having not been properly fishing for years I got on the bay and bought the cheapest 12ft rod + reel going so I could get out and catch some din dins..
after a few shit days of nothing the weather was looking up for today so I hit the pier with the other half and we got casting.
I managed to get hold of some vintage penn reels from some guy local to us so had to try em out.. 1st cast birdsnest like a bitch! reeled in nothing 2nd cast birdsnest.. fuck this ripped it off changed back to my cheap ass reeel that came with the rod and carried on..
using a centrepin reel as a dropline with 1lb weight on it and a 3 hook boom on my dropline, .05lb weight on my rod with 3 hook booms using black lug I was set.
Reeling in codling after codling but nothing worth keeping so switched to the dropline to see what I had..
reeled in a nice scorpionfish! luckily id only just lipped it so the hook came straight out, grabbed a load of cloth and threw it back making sure the bastard didn't sting me.
still catching codling 1-2 a time on my rod focusing on my dropline for a bit I got a bloody crab! seems I dropped it a bit too low.. back he goes.
chucked the dropline back and within 2 minutes I had a bite.. another scorpionfish this time hook was buried! after standing on its head and all sorts getting the hook out without being stung It got thrown back and ready to sting some unsuspecting child.
all in all it was a lulzy day with the catch totally 15+ before it started to get too cold and dark to be out any longer..
Few pics:
The complete kit below, 3 rods (only used 2) and 3 reels + centrepin reel + booms cost me £45 so cheap as heck but now the other half knows how to fish a bit better im going to have to upgrade.

The British record for a short spined sea-scorpion is 2lb 7oz.
That was a speciment fish and would probably have won you an angling contest.
They are no venomous, the spines are sharp but nothing more so you were dancing about like a fairy for no good reason.
The only venomous fish I'm aware of in UK waters is the weaver and they can be fucking nasty. They have a trianglular black dorsal fin with three poison spines. People die of weaver stings. If you pull in a weaver, cut the line.

I've caught many a brown crab but I always steered clear of that type as they are an aggressive fooker. I don't think I've seen one that size before.
Anyway, you get a cool rating for the scorpion fish. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
