Hi guys,

Recently I was told by a guy who works for the DSA that it's stupid to speed on the M1 (or any motorway) because they have a lot of electronics watching cars.

I want to clear this up for certain now because I'm so tired of hearing different stories regarding this.

1) Who's been caught on the motorway before?
2) Does the van have to be on a bridge, where can they sit?
3) Any stories regarding this?

Go!

How would a DSA guy know, and what sort of "electronics"?

Caught once, for undertaking a marked police car, then not slowing down for the 40 limit for the cones where some people weren't doing any road works. This earnt me a bollocking.

Police cars/vans will sit on bridges, and they have cut ins at the side of the motorway too.

No stories, I reckon the DSA guy was just trying to scare you/put you off being a hooligan straight away.

Seen these flash without the speed display before now between J26-25. Not to say it issues you a ticket, but why give them a chance?

I've never seen them flash, regardless of speed? There's only about two or three that actually have cameras on them anyway.

Someone here reported getting a ticket and view was they will flash if your speed is 20mph over the speed limit. l saw them flash a car that overtook me on the M20, l was doing 80 odd.

One of the Gantry Cameras near Luton heading northbound frequently flashes, I am regularly "absent minded" up and down the M1 (MK to London) and have never had a problem.

I did hear that the was some sort of technicality which meant they were not recording speeders yet

FYI the ones on the M62 control area near Leeds are always active. Even if speed limit signs off they default to 70mph. Stories in local press about this, e.g. like here

Rear facing too so will get motorbikes (as opposed to forward average speed ones).

It doesn't affect me really, as I stick to 70mph on motorways for the sake of fuel, but I don't like the idea of it.

The only time there's an opportunity to speed is when I'm going down on a sunday night, where there are no cars about and generally four lanes of emptiness. If I wanted to exceed the speed limit by a marginally excessive amount, it wouldn't have an impact on anybody at all.

This is why the phog massive spent the fortnight following BBQ 2012 awaiting bus passes.

So much conflicting info out there on these things, these days I just go through them at smack on 70 if they are not showing a limit. The new stretch of them on the M62 certainly flash for exceeding NSL and I don't want to find out what threshold.

Same here, need my license for my job so I'm not going to push it. Had my licence taken off me for medical reasons and managed to keep my job, don't think I could push it for racking up penalty points. I normally due 74mph according to my cruise control, but I take that with a pinch of salt.

I personally know of someone who has been done by the average speed cameras on the M6, at night.

My dad drives for a living and has told me of cars being flashed on the motorway before, then a comical wall of brake lights being applied.
