This is sooooooooo out of my technical knowledge ballpark it's ridiculous. HOWEVER ....

After several weeks of broadband nonconnectivity*, O2 have helpfully clarified to me that my computer is at fault, not them. They have at least restored wireless to the household, but ...

Apparently on my pc which is working but just not connecting ...

"The network adapter Intel(R) 82566DC-2 Gigabit Network Connection is experiencing driver or hardware related issues"

So if I go to work tomorrow, download the most up to date Intel-wossname driver, and either email it to myself or save it on one of them stick thingies, to bring home and save onto the pc hard drive, and then make it search for driver updates ... will I be doing the correct thing?

I'm using my Kindle Fire HD to get online wirelessly , but it's a proper trudge to do anything, and the screen is so small it gives me headaches.

And if the drivers update doesn't work, what hardware will it be that is giving me "issues", and is it easy to buy a new one I got the PC years ago (2007) from PC world. It's a Advent 2-quad or something ...

Please avoid technical descriptions in any responses you might care to give ... you know how dense I am at these things ... and now with the added disability of reading and responding on a screen that is smaller than my hand-span Mad I am not a happy hellkat.

*I'm assuming nobody noticed I was barely here since the start of the New Year ... Laughing

Try this.

Start - settings - control panel - performance and maintainance - system - hardware - device manager.

Right-click the yellow-marked network adapter and click uninstall. Then click action - scan for hardware changes.

Ok, been in and out of device manager often lately, so I know kinda how to find that.

Thanks (exactly the level I was hoping for) Smile
So. You mean those ones with a yellow exclamation mark (there's Quite A Lot of them ... )
*bites lip nervously*

That's a lot!

I'd do as Pete suggested with all the ropey ones.

Uninstall them all then you can do a single scan for hardware changes

Okay, it's let me delete all the yellows except for the bottom two WAN network monitor and Sstp . If I do this below, what should I expect to happen next?

I've still got a big red X with two computers in the network icon (not connected icon)

That's my forever unfinished novel _ The Serial Killer's Convention Laughing

I need to pull my finger out and get it written. Although I have spent a lot more time plotting it out since I've been (a) offline (can't play Castleville...) and (b) getting out of town and relaxing on weekends. I've chosen a nice spot to sit and write (with Hetzers kindly-donated no-internet laptop (keeps me wonderfully focussed, but researching is tedious without Google), and I get to think and look out over the fields.

I might publish it online like a Saturday morning pictures thing, a bit like Stephen King did with The Green Mile. Spin the plot out a bit until I think of the next bit Laughing if I get any customers, that is. This thing called The Following sounds interesting, a mate mentioned it. I need to watch that, it sounds like exactly the mindset i need to get into.

Anyway! The pc is still offline. Looking at some list or other, Failed Updates or something ... it seems it's been failing to update some network drivers for quite a while, no idea what I've done to cause that Sad

I might have a go at downloading some drivers tomorrow onto the key from my work pc.

Any other devices yellow-marked? Like system device or something? Might be a chipset driver gone bad.

I've just sorted a similar problem, could connect to the wireless router but decided it was an "unidentified network" and wouldn't connect to the net. Had to download the driver to my phone, transfer it across and update the driver. Been fine since then.

Silly question, but your system try has a "no network cable plugged in" kinda logo... the cable is plugged in and flashing right? Looks like this..

https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/cat-5-cable-end-25370048.jpg

Also that is a fuck load of avast stuff, have you tried uninstalling it? Just for a temporary trial and error, you have no internet anyway? Laughing

Failing that, are you anywhere near Orpington...?

Thanks for the ideas, guys ..

Just got in, I'll go have a look for other yellow dodginess in a bit.

Simply haven't had time all day to download stuff, will try and do it tomorrow.

Paddox : yes, the dsl cable and the ethernet cable were both properly plugged in (they clicked!). I am considering removing Avast, yes Laughing

The place where the computer is based is more northerer up the A2 from orpington, just on the other side of the Blackwall tunnel Smile

It was the Avast.

As soon as I uninstalled it, my network came back up Mr. Green Thumbs Up now the two computers have the happy bluey greeny circle thing down in the system tray (instead of a red X)

I did check that all the other devices in the device manager were okay, and there was no other yellows in there. It was that WAN thing that made me realise it might be the Avast as mentioned above, as it was only networky things that had Avast problems and both mentioned a WAN.

Thanks for all your help, fellas xxx *snogs* xxx

*trundles cheerfully off to re-install AVG or some such instead of Avast*

Anybody have any modern suggestions on that front? I'll prolly go back to AVG cos it seemed fairly competent to me.

I'm on the other side of the Blackwall tunnel on my occasional jaunts to the country mansion. I shall wave with two fingers as I pass Orpington (when are you moving to your snazzy little new place?)
