Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone can tell me what my problem is, i had starting problems with my suzuki gs750 ever since i bought it, i thought it may have been the battery but no it wasn't, i thought it may have been the rectifier but again no it wasn't, but today i tried starting it from the button and the earth from the battery box started smoking slightly, could this be water that has seeped into the starter button or a broken wire in the loom?
any help will be much appreciated thanks Smile

Smoking would indicate heat and a short somewhere as bike battery's can kick out a beefy current needed for turning over the engine.

If it's a recurring problem then I would go hunting for rubbing wires where the insulation has come off.

Start by finding the wiring diagram and see if there are wires that are physically close to the starter wire motors if it only smokes when the starter motor is used.

is the motor earthed properly with a good stout copper earth lead back to battery
bikes have smallish battery leads that are ok when new but they have a limit to their service life
if the lead is burnt it will have more resistance and heat up more

I always improve the earth systems on all my bikes

Starter solenoids can have problems too
Sidestand switches are a pain too
