Evening all,

I'm rather perplexed by my battery dying. The bike has been laid up and on a trickle charger since around October time. On Saturday, I went to start and take the bike out for a spin and upon hitting the starter button I found that it was totally flat.

I plugged the bike immediately in to the charger and found that it went straight in to recovery mode. There's two thoughts that have crossed my mind (that I'll test when I'm at home on the weekend):

A) The battery was fried before putting it back on the charger. To test this, I'll plug in the new battery I have (a Varta as I've never had a problem with them) just ordered and connect up the multi meter and verify the reg / rec is working.

B) The charger is fucked but I have no reason to suspect it is other than the battery has died while plugged in.

I have a Cyclone V2 alarm wired in to the battery but even so, with it plugged into the charger, the battery shouldn't die or am I missing something?

The bike ran flawlessly from November 2012 until it was laid up a few months back and I haven't suffered a stuffed battery, dimming lights or anything else though curiously the day I laid it up, i noticed the clock was out of time.

The bike is a Honda Varadero 07 ABS with a Cyclone V2 alarm and heated grips plumbed in on a relay with the taken it's switch from the headlight.

Any ideas BCF?

James

You've had the battery on charge since October, while the alarm was still connected to it and connect to your bike?

I'm no expert but if i was using a trickle charger my first thought would to disconnect the batter completely and charge it on its own.

It wouldn't charge the way it should with the alarm still wired up, because its still powering it. I think

Battery's fucked.

Can you be sure the charger really was connected?
Batteries will still fail at some point.
Even if it was on it's 2nd one about 3 years life is sort of average.

I'm 99% sure it was. The new battery will be here tomorrow so I can do some testing over the weekend.

Turns out that the reg / rec is nakard. Testing with the new battery showed that at 5000rpm the battery voltage is dropping to 10v and under.

Time to order a new one. Third Honda, second reg / rec Sad.

James

*Edit*
When I had the Firestorm, I replaced the reg / rec with that off an R1. Can I do the same with the Varadero or not as it's FI'd?
