I live in Aberdeen and want to do a camping tour of Scandanavia. What's the best way for say a ten day trip camping. Cost and route etc. This would be a summer jaunt.

You need to be somewhat more specific prior to being able to give any meaningful information. Where in Scandinavia? It covers a huge area which consists of five countries, but I assume you will be only interested in four (Iceland will not be on your list!). Which ferry service are you using? Costs for these rise during the school holiday period and are already relatively expensive. Costs within most Scandinavian countries are higher than the UK, use Google to show fuel costs. The Norwegian police issue hefty fines for speeding – be warned. Norway, Sweden and Finland are large countries and take some considerable time to travel through. Another cost to bear in mind, there are many ferries that you will need to use in southern Norway if you visit that country.

Its a bit of a general idea at the moment. Mostly depending on where I can get a ferry from for the cheapest crossing. So if its sweden then I would tour sweden if norway then norway it is. Its very frustrating trying to find ferries as well there are so many booking sites. I think the nearest ferry port to me is edinburgh but I'm not sure.

Ferry from Newcastle to Ijmuiden or Amsterdam as the thick fuckers call it and rude up. Holland - Germany, stay north up to Hamburg and either ride north to fehmarn for a ferry or up to Denmark and rive over the large bridges to Sweden.

There was talk of the Newcastle to Stavanger & Bergen ferry service being reinstated but that has yet to be confirmed.

Which 5 countries?

Iceland isn't scandinavian, or at least it wasn't when I was studying Scandinavian history and literature.

Bear in mind that it's illegal to ride off-road in Norway. The test is subjective, but generally is declared as anything that an ordinary car wouldn't bother to drive down.

Southern Sweden is pretty flat, not much interesting landscape to see. Brits are seen as exotic though, so you can always spend the time partying.

I would estimate anywhere from £5 a day if you sleep rough in your tent and eat supernoodles, to £50 or £60 a night if you stay in campsites and eat in restaurants.

Add £200 for the ferry, and 250miles a day petrol.

Have found out I can get from newcastle to amsterdam. £280 return in june for midweek crossing. So might as well forget scandinavia and just do something like holland germany france maybe visit the alps.

Why? 9-10 hours on the bike and you are in Sweden when you get off the ferry. Split that over two days if you like and just do the south.

Two nights ferry
Four night riding
4 nights in Sweden.

Holland will make you fall asleep if you have no destination. Drive down the south and play in the Black Forest if you don't do Sweden.

Or

Play in the Dolomites in north Italy. Cut riding down to two days and again

Two nights ferry
Four night riding
4 nights in Italy.

^ Arabba, Cortina area is fantastic and cut through Lake Konstanz on the way down.

Well seen you are from Aberdeen you tight git. Very Happy Gone are the days getting the ferry from Rosyth. Look again on the DFDS web site, I am sure they do a ferry to Denmark from the UK. You can throw a stone to Sweden from there however, double check dates ate its only 2-3 times a week and summer only. Camping is good anywhere round Europe but for the sake of a good nights sleep I would do a couple of nights in a B&B.

I did wonder if freighting the bike to norway then flying would work but then would probably be cheaper to just take the extra time off work to do the whole ride up from holland and treat myself to a nice hotel one night somewhere.

Would be good to meet up. I would probably do Newcastle to Amsterdam though and then enjoy the ride up through germany to denmark rather than have the bore of riding all the way down to Harwich then ferry to esbjerg. I will keep it in mind though as wold be good to do a trip in company.

Those bridges are bloody expensive too. I went over the Oresund bridge about 6 years ago and it was around 420DKK - about 40 quid - EACH WAY. The bridges connecting Fyn, Sjaelland, Jutland and then the one from Sjaelland to Sweden (The Øresund bridge) are all expensive as hell. Ride over them all both ways and you're looking at at least a hundred quid if not more.

If you can avoid via getting the ferry or by not going to Sweden, then do it. Unless you like expensive shit (Scandinavia is brill, done Denmark 6 times and Sweden once) I'd pick somewhere else unless you had a fair wodge. Seriously, it wouldn't be hard to spend 500 quid a week in Denmark/Sweden if you stayed even in cheap hotels.

Now I did expect a charge but sod all like that. I got my ferry town wrong. Its from Travemunde or whatever its called. Did you notice what that costs? To be honest I would rather ride south for the heat. Yeah Norway looks amazing but if getting there is that expensive then sod them, ill keep getting drunk with the Dutch and Germans. Smile

I've not done the ferry from Travemunde so I don't know the price. I have done a ferry from Germany to Denmark but it wasn't that one. May have been the one from Kiel to be honest, but even then I was 14 or so (21 now) and I didn't pay Laughing Not only that we were in a car anyway. I think we did it because it was around the same price as crossing the bridges from Jutland across Fyn and into Sjaelland plus the fuel. Not only that Hamburg to Copenhagen (we were visiting friends and did a run into Germany) is about a 6 hour drive or a 3 hour ferry sailing (I think) and we couldn't be arsed driving all the way.

Scandinavia is expensive as fook even by European standards (and generally the further east you go, the worse it gets). Denmark is about 8 quid for a butty and a beer in a cafe, Finland is probably another fiver on top of that and Norway/Sweden somewhere in the middle of that. A pint in Copenhagen (or half litre as they do them by) is about 4 quid on it's own. They've got some good beers (and equally very attractive women Wink or men if that's your fancy) but it's just horrific on your wallet. If SWMBO doesn't kill you, you bank manager will Laughing.

In Sweden we stayed in a Formula 1 hotel (or similar, can't remember off hand) and it was the equivalent of about £40 a night or so I think including breakfast but without an en-suite bog.

I also had curried chicken and banana pizza in Sweden as well Laughing A lot nicer than it sounds, honest!

There isn't a toll bridge between Jutland and Fyn but there is between Fyn and Sjaelland, plus the Oresund one that links Copenhagen with Malmo in Sweden. That is is expensive - €25 for a bike, per trip!

That price list is quite disgusting. I bet they don't drop the price when the bridge is paid for. Christ, Formula 1 hotels still running. I used them in the early 90's. Thought they looked rough. Ibis was the good clean cheap one to go for round the time. Bloody expensive now though.

You need to consider that the cost of living is a lot higher in Scandinavia, but then so are the wages. I know an air traffic controller at Copenhagen airport who's on about £80k a year but drives a 5 year old Focus Estate as he can't afford a new car (taxes etc) and lives in a 3 bedroomed terraced house in the suburbs, 25 miles from his job.

I think the worst thing is about them is that you have no choice - if you want to drive from Germany and into Sweden through Denmark you have to use them.

Formula 1 hotels aren't bad nowadays, at least the ones I've stayed in in the last 10 years. Basic, clean, has a bed and a shower. Keeps me happy.

I'd use the Immingham - Brevik, freight ferry. just discuss with the operator first which sailing in both directions is the less busy. There is a slight risk your booking might be cancelled. I'd be fully prepared to take that risk with a plan B to fall back on. The savings over the 'long way round' are considerable and more than worth the risk.

Sooner or later opinions fade and the name on the tank matters not. I think that happens somewhere between 3rd and 4th gear. Enjoy the ride... everything else takes care of itself.

Oo I've fancied this too, think I need a bit more touring under my belt first though.

Was planning on ferry - calais, ride up to denmark, across the bridges, up through norway, across sweden a bit, down through finland, ferry helsinki - tallinn, then ride back through latvia, lith, poland etc.

No doubt it would be expensive. Might do the cruise ship first up norway from bergen to see how doable it might be. Smile
