So what A2 compliant bike can I get for around £600-700

Looking for Enduro/Supermoto/Commuter

Would rather near 47bhp than restricting but not too worried

Just fishing for what I should be looking at really.

Thumbs Up

The ideal bike for what you want (A2 compliant/supermoto/enduro styling which can also be used for commuting) would be the DRZ 400. But the prices some owners are asking for them is a little silly; if your lucky you might get one for £1,500.

Have you looked at the KLE 500's? Not quite enduro like you want but could probably be used for some light greenlaning. Should be able to get one for less than £1k. Also, bang on 47bhp.

MZ Baghira, Skorpion, Mastiff Thumbs Up got my Skorpion for £500, they make a claimed 47/48 BHP.

Or the parent bike which the MZ took its motor from, the Yamaha XT 660 (5 valve engine) here's one almost in your budget
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1991-YAMAHA-XT-XTZ-660-TENERE-/251435863793?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item3a8abecef1

If you would rather a twin then Suzuki GS500E are native to 47 BHP, though I don't really think much of them, boring dull and gutless with no character (felt the big single MZ had at least something to it)

Kawasaki ER 5 and KLE 500, both near the 47 limit (both exceed it slightly at about 50 odd BHP) slightly more character for the ER than a GS and a bit more go to them, cant comment on a KLE from experience though.

All can be found for £700 +/- Thumbs Up

Mainly for snow fun/green laning and 10mile commute and the odd 100mile ride

not too worried about speed mainly fun and easy to work on also could put more cash in once I sell the 125 so would have about £1600 to play with.

Would rather not 2smoke as I have the GPR for that just need a gasket set and rad I think.

You're wanting it to do a fair bit.

I'd look out for one of the old school 600s - DR600 or KLR600. They are a bit lighter than the later 650s, but no electric boot. Similar weight to a DRZ400, but a bit more midrange.
You do need a man-kick to start it though - I've seen people just stand up on the kick start rather than actually turn the engine!

However, me, I'd go for a 2 stroke fun bike - 90 or late 80s enduro 200cc+, get a road set of wheels, THEN a boring GPZ, SV or whatever for the daily stuff. Makes more sense than getting a heavier so it's reliable but not TOO heavy bike for taking off road AND trying to distance on the same bike.

Thats a fair statement, doing distance on it is going to be once in a blue moon thing, i.e BCF rideouts and going to the beach in the summer what summer i'd expect I could do that on a supermoto as I do it already on my 125 with no major issues beside lack of power.

I am not limiting myself to supermotos/enduro trail style bikes as greenlaning isn't the ultimate goal for me, 2 bikes may be an option but i don't want a 2 shite bikes rather that get a good all rounder.

When my do my A2 I can't ride the bike I already have as it make too much power to restrict (Damn you honda)

Very open to ideas so shoot.

I've done a few 200+ mile days on the CCM, absolutely loads of 300+ mile days on the KTM 690. Doesn't mean they're an ideal choice, however Smile.
But if it's a 'fun rideout' it's less of an issue; as opposed to getting from A to B sitting on a motorway.

The problem is with the dirt stuff, you're always going to have a compromise somewhere.

Your budget is pretty restricting for 'good bikes', I'd say.

I'd like a 500cc twin engine in something like a decent 125 or 250cc sportsbike chassis. I think say an NSR250 chassis with a CB500 engine would be mildly entertaining?

Laughing

CB500 engine in a NSR250 would be a waste of an NSR maybe a blown up 125 but I am sure there are more exciting engine to be had for CB500 engine money (unless you have one sitting around)

All of this.

I had the bright idea that a big single dirt bike would be a good allrounder, but they really aren't.

I love my XL600 as a town tool, but over 50 it vibrates like a bastard and the riding position hangs you out in the wind like a sail, so any kind of long distance motorway trip is a proper mission.

Also, keeping it on any sort of tyre/wheel combination that gives you anything like off road capability, seriously compromises it's tarmac performance, especially on wet roads.

Then there's the money question; 700 quid buys you sod all in terms of an off road style bike, assuming you don't want a 'fixer upper'; I started looking at that kind of budget, then ended up spending almost double that.

If off roading isn't the real aim, get a road bike and open up so many more options.

klr650 or pegaso 650, both excellent bikes,
perhaps the klx650 it has a gear driven counter balancer which eliminates any issues the klr had,
the pegaso is good with the rotax motor (same one used in the bmw's)
but... the exhausts rust under the seat, so you have to buy a stainless set, £170 from motad, i paid £770 quid for one that had 20000 kms (12k miles) on it the new ones run the yamaha xt660 motor,

i love the air cooled rotax motored bikes, ccm (r30) 600, mz500, armstrong 500, etc etc, that motor is sooooo good,

on that note if any one has a ccm rotax engined bike, send me a pm if you want rid Wink

if yu want old school the old air head beemer are pretty fun,
my daily is an r80 and while its tractor like, its one of te most fun bikes ive ever owned, you'll win no races on it, but it always starts, and mine has never given me any trouble at all
