Hi,

I've heard many universitys tend to operate a "No Cars for students in their first year" policy. I was wondering if this also applied to bikes?

Any experiences from people at uni at the mo (i know theres a few!)

Cheers,

Craig

Erm, how could the university stop a student from having a car? Confused

Depends on the uni really, personally i'd just turn up and park it..

Find out if there is a bike socioty there and ask them, or the student union...

Because its a bike you should be able to park it off the car park somewhere, seen people park theirs in under the stairs in halls! (well pushbikes do, its a bike aint it Razz)

I think there's only about one or two uni's out of over a hundred that do a 'no-car' policy. Even if you did select one, I'd doubt they stop you using a bike as you can park 'em virtually anywhere. If they've got cycle bays, you can park a bike Wink

I would however look into where you can securely park your bike, especially if its in a city.

If you can park it somewhere and it doesnt obstruct people, why not!

IF there is a no vehicles policy for first year ( stirling uni has one but I'm no sure if its cars only) then you will find like many others do that your bike can usually squeeze past barriers and nonsense like that Wink

What do you mean "Sorted it out"? Did u have to get permission or did u just bring it in? I presume claud has the bike parked outside his accomodation?

I'd tell the insurance company where the bike is spending most of its time - else they could sting you if it gets nicked!

Park mine outside the student accommodation houses (on small drive), on campus.

Road parking would be ok as well I suppose. Get a bike cover, chain and disk lock at least. Lock the bike up to a fixed obstacle.

There usually are bike spaces in the car park area for bikes at your Uni.

You must tell the insurance company where the bike is being kept - change of address, and location (eg garged/street/driveway). Premium may go up. Mine didn't.

You should be ok with taking your bike down there, as Maurice mentioned: you can park a bike anywhere really.

Phone your Uni if you are unsure.

We had no problems claiming for Jimmy's bike as he was 'visiting a friend'.

However, I would be very careful taking your bike to university before you have scouted around for secure parking. You really have to be very careful - thieves know to target student areas. Think of all those laptops, stereos etc all in one very small area! A bike would make an excellent get-away vehicle, if not just another bit of booty.

At Loughborough, you'll be very very lucky to get a parking permit for a car in the first year. However, a bike is no problem. You pay somewhat less and can get secure parking too if you pay a tenner more I think. They like you to have a full licence, but L plates are okay once you have permission from the bursar.

To be honest, if I had just parked it in the student car park and chucked the cover over it without the permit, I doubt they'd have bothered. Of course I don't actually put the permit on it either.

Your best bet is to talk to some of the servitors/porters. Most universities have little nooks and crannies all over the place and these are the guys who know where they are.

When I was at uni. I used to help the head porter with his car, he had some electrical problems with it that were fairly simply sorted out, helped top-up the oil and suchlike. As we were chatting about bike thefts he mentioned that he knew somewhere to park it. Landed up with a little bay in the corner of a locked yard at the faculty right under a cctv camera, there was a rail to chain it to and everything.

Also worth noting that a lot of the science and engineering faculties have hidden away workshops where they make their own apparatus. They are usually hidden away in a basement somewhere and have all manner of power tools and fabricating equipment. The technicians sit around bored for a lot of the time and are only too happy to help/lend tools.

The technician at our faculty did a good line in billet oil filler caps with a tamper-proof fitting to stop the schemies nicking them. Took him ten minutes to run one up on the lathe complete with a tool to remove them that fitted on your keyring. 2.50 each. He used to lend me his big de-walt cordless drill if I needed to drill out any stuck bolts too.

Most people spend years at university without realising these people and places even exist, they are often happy to go out for a pint of an evening too, great for getting away from some of the affected, self-important pricks you tend to get round universities.

Very right!
I have gotten to know the porters in my department very well - they are incredibly useful when it comes to letting me park my bike securely behind the department. As was the guy who used to work as security in my halls of residence. He would look out for my bike, and prevented me getting a parking ticket on more than one occasion by saying it was his. Thumbs Up Top guys the porters are Thumbs Up

Birmingham Uni said no need for students to commute using their cars if they're living in halls, yet didn't ban it (how can they really). I kept a bike and a car at my uni halls and used both to commute to uni, without hassle. Only thing they didn't like was me parking my bike under the stairs in the stairwell as it was a fire hazard but I moved it and they didn't complain again.

Hi

My sister is at Leeds and I think they want £1000 a year for a car parking permit when they are in halls. Not sure about bikes.

All the best

At Bath cars are banned but bikes are allowed, I have mine at uni with me.

As long as you don't take up a car parking space, I'm sure it'll be fine.

I had a car and bike at uni, although them were the days of grants not loans Laughing
Cars weren't banned, but were such a pain in the arse to park, not worth the hassle in halls.

The only answer if you want a car is to live in a house with your buddies.

Bikes were never questioned at uni. There was always a small alcove or something to hide it in. The only thing to do is ring the uni you want to go to but I very much doubt there will be a problem.

I was at Notts BTW.

Fook me! Shocked

In Loughborough, students living in halls can get a parking permit for £30 or so. £19 for bikes I think, with an extra 5-10 to get secure parking.

Then and again, is Leeds a city campus with lax security, or all on one site with decent security?

Hi

The halls are in the middle of nowhere, but Leeds as a city is run by those who hate cars.

All the best

Had my bike when I was at Northumbria uni, they were OK about it 'cos it didnt take up any space, as long as you told the right people you were fine.
