Hi Guys. Just put a deposit down on a yamaha fz8. Just sorting out insurance and noticed there is quite a detailed section on bike security. Do insurance companies offer a worth while saving on what type of locks, alarms and trackers used? Will a 2010 fz8 have any kind of factory security on it? What do people recommend? I couldn't believe the size of the drop down menu on different types of locks and alarms. Sorry for the rant. cheers adam

A bare minimum would be factory immobiliser, but don't put down anything your unsure of - chances are without security your quote will be cheaper anyways.

I tried the difference between a £200 Almax 3 chain with squire lock (best chain/lock combo on the market without a doubt), and then a cheap alarmed disklock, and there was NO DIFFERENCE in price on the quote. Mental.

Also consider that if it is nicked, you can bet your arse if it wasn't secured with your Almax they won't pay out. My policy is explicit in that at home the bike needs securing with the Almax and away from home, I need to use a sold secured disk lock.

My cheapest quote on Ze Beemer went up by 1/3rd when I listed an Almax Series III + Squire lock.

Where are you keeping it.

It should have a factory immobiliser which is generally enough - i'd be much less worried about it being wired and ridden away and more about physically dragged away and ripped to bits for parts etc which is much more common for newer bikes particularly.

Insurance reduction wise its often little if any difference, i've seen in a few threads on here in the past its even ended up cheaper without security measures included.

In terms of general security, get a good chain and good ground anchor - the majority of supposedly secure chains can be cut with manual bolt croppers in little time and with minimal noise. Almax and pragamasis are considered good chains generally.

Ground anchors wise something like this [mammoth anchor] with a double bridge is good. Usually will be installed with raul bolts which are incredibly hard to get out the ground - but you can also use them with concrete resin to really secure it.https://thumbs2.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/maJgKPiQd-fTzC5cgHCZ8KA.jpg
Besides that Cyclone do good cheap alarm systems for around 30 quid, but if you aren't using the bike regularly/have access to a charger for keeping it topped up they can drain the battery, so an alarmed disc lock can be good. Cheap ones i've found are a bit tempremental in the wind though and get set off easily a lot of the time as you can't adjust their sensitivity like you can with alarms.

Worth putting a vented waterproof cover on it if its being kept outside too to reduce prying eyes and keep the weather away.

A good alarm. Louder the better, on my cbr250 i got a datatool system.4 (thatcham cat one) living on a council estate it literally knocked 400 quid off the insurance....
