I blame the parents.
If it is the flooding, to save money, they stopped dredging a lot of rivers in 1996 - after they had been done for hundreds of years. In Somerset, they even scrapped all the machinery It seems pretty obvious to me that if you stop dredging, the river bottom raises and the rivers can no longer carry the amount of water that they could. It's classic Govt. nonsense - trying to save a few hundred thousand pounds will cost billions
Whoever decided to stop dredging, should be horse-whipped......or drowned. ____________________ Space Is Deep |

Do you know what the 'Water table' is? Don't they cover simple Geology in schools any more? ____________________ Make mine a Corona. |

Christ, that was over 35 years ago Is it the water table that carries water to the sea?
Michael Eavis says that's the reason....... so I'm going with it. ____________________ Space Is Deep |

No, the water table is the level at which the water settles in the ground, if it's higher than the river levels (ie saturated to standing water flooding point) then it doesn't matter how much dredging has occurred. Our society seems more concerned with quicker run off techniques which then just create problems for coastal areas.
Dredging helps under normal weather patterns and would have delayed the flooding onset but with the recent weather stuff was going to flood regardless. |
Thats the thing with the levels. the river is higher than the actual flood planes themselves, so much like the fen's, which hasn't flooded, but funnily enough is controlled by the drainage board, who's in charge of the levels? yes that's right, the environment agency.
The issue here is a total lack of maintenance, on another forum I'm on, someone is friends with an agronomist that holds regular talks with the EA and over the years , they have purposely been letting the drainage system block up so that the water vole and field mouse numbers increase which explains why none of it has been dredged out, alot of places would have flooded anyway, but not to the extent it has now, The Ea wants to stick to what it does 'best' and build defenses for big cities, leave man made ecosystems like the downs to the drainage board to sort out. It needs getting grip of because with all these massive towns and cities being built and ever expanding, the water has to go somewhere and not just left to someone down stream to deal with. ____________________ '00 Aprilia RS50 > '92 Honda CG > '99 Yamaha Fazer > '91 Yamaha RXS > '79 Suzuki X5 > 01' Honda Cg > 07' Honda Cg > 82' Kawasaki Z200 > suzuki gsxr 400 gk73a > honda vfr 400 NC30 Mod 2 Passed 09/06/2011
