I can see absolutely no reason for doing this from an aesthetic or an engineering point of view.

I think it's used to lessen the heat coming back onto your legs, but it's so ugly I would never bother, looks utter cack to me.

If I saw that I'd think it was a bodge job on a rusty/holed part of the exhaust. Looks awful.

I did hear/read somewhere that wraps and ceramic coatings can improve gas flow. I think it was something to do with improving heat retention in the exhaust helps the gas flow better.

I can only think by having hotter pipes and thus exhaust gasses, there is greater gas expansion and pressure which could create greater back pressure in the rest of the system and make the gas flow out the back of the exhaust easier.

This is all theory though and any performance gained from this effect could be almost nil. I don't remember ever seeing MotoGP bikes with ceramic/wrapped exhausts.

Technical-wise I haven't the faintest idea, but i've tended to think its people with rusty pipes trying to make their bike look better. Seems common on cruisers Thinking

I've also read this sort of stuff, by people who are meant to be in the know, but I've also never seen any really high performance vehicles, built by people who have every resource at their disposal, using exhaust wrap purely for the purpose of increasing performance.

I have seen it used in an attempt to insulate the exhaust from parts that might be adversely affected by heat, I've even used it for that reason myself, but it didn't produce any extra go.

Personally, I think it's snake oil, and not very good looking snake oil at that.

Bike is too light?

I have heard the heat retention thing - possibly would also help emissions by burning off unburnt fuel.

Normal use I've seen it for is to protect other parts - some were trying it on the Daytonas to stop the shock getting hot- as that then changes the damping properties.
However, this was just on the bit by the shock.

Shaft has banged it on the head. It is of use when there are fuel systems in the vicinity, eg, under the bonnet of V6-8's. Helps to pervent/limit fuel vapourisation, I have never known of a bike application where improvement has occurred. I await stats from the manufacturers to prove me wrong. Thinking

I have seen it used a long time back on single cylinder race bikes.

Thin walled race exhausts can resonate quite loudly with the power pulses and generate a lot of noise (almost like a bell ringing). When you are marginal on the noise limits anyway, as singles have a habit of being, it can be effective in cutting the total noise down slightly as it damps the vibrations in the exhaust. It can also damp the reflection/propogation of the sound wave as it travels along the pipe again cutting the total sound volume slightly.

Not sure of the 'benefits' of heat retention, I always thought ceramic/fireproof nature was more to stop it catching fire than any other reason. I once saw an XBR500 racer with ordinary fabric wrapped round the headers, held on with loops of lockwire. It lasted until about the second lap then started depositing bits of burning material all over the track.

Probably first used for brit singles in the 50s and 60s where the caferacer styling originates from.

Agree it looks wank though.

In its current form, it's hipster bullshit.

But I have seen it used on classic trials bikes to stop you burning your leg on a high level exhaust.

often used on modified cars where trying to keep the engine temp within a set range as your air intake is also under there.

Wrapping the exhaust insulates it a bit helping keep the under bonnet temperature down a bit.

On a bike it's a bit of a pointless excersise but would help protect downpipes from corrosion on a commuter bike or, as already said, part of the style on a 60's caffe racer (probably covering up rusty pipes!)

its all down to energy..power produces energy in both physical (piston) and thermal (heat) forms...so more heat loss means more energy loss..so thermally insulating the exhausts minimises the loss of energy in the form of heat..

I, ahem, think you may not be entirely aware of the function of an exhaust on a motorcycle Laughing.

I have it on my pit bike to stop the plastics melting against the C90 exhaust I have to use. Also, in black, it looks quite tarty.
