You can get pretty much any bike and restrict it to 33bhp. However there are a couple of points to be wary of:

Arrow Some bikes don't respond well to the restrictor kit
Arrow Insurance companies don't take much notice that the bike is restricted so a 33bhp R1 will cost more to insure than a 33bhp ER-5
Arrow The bike that will be best when restricted will already be close to 33bhp normally, I believe a Goose is close(ish), may be wrong though

Some people go for a 400cc bike, others seem to go for a 500cc commuter style bike (e.g. GPZ, ER-5, GS500 etc..), it seems silly to stick with a 125 with a full licence, you will soon be wanting more speed.

Wotcha dude.

Get a 500, gs or er5(mine) Both tend to be cheaper than the other 500's (cb500 and gpz), are fast enough when you've just passed your test (my er-5 does 0-60 in about 6.5 seconds restricted and 90mph, 5.4 seconds and 105mph in standard from which I have now....ahem)

They are stupidly cheap, they can't hold their value at all, and so long as you look after them well, they have good build quality. Running costs are pretty low I have to say, £8.50 for a full tank which gets you about 150 miles.

Parts can be got off ebay very cheaply and from www.gear4bikes.com and insurance is very good, I pay £500 tpft and I'm 20, passed my test on the day I got my er5insured Very Happy Dodsi, another BCF member here, pays just over £300 I believe and he's younger than me.

The 500's (excluding older gs500's) have lots more road presence than a small 125 which you'll no doubt be used to. A bike bike feel with half decent performance, low running costs, huge reliability and known to be good for novices like me, then you can't go wrong.

This goes for all 500's but I'm biased as I have an Er-5 myself Very Happy If you can't find an er thats restricted, pm me and I'll guide you onto how to restrict it by getting free restriction washers. All legal of course, just saves you £150 on buying and fitting the kit.

The cheapest best solution is to get a large capacity bike that doesnt produce much power and doesnt need restricting.
something like a goose or a bros has a nice big engine for cruising, low down grunt and doesnt need restricting.

Logic out the window, most go for something tary like a sports 400 or 250. alot don't bother restricting them Shifty

Dodsi pays £248 for his insurance TPFT

and also dodsi is 19 with 1 years NCB

I like the ER-5 as restricted its fine not exactly slow and is a good learner bike. cant see myself sticking too an ER-5 for more than a couple of years.

I had a GS500 de-restricted Shhh! and while it was fun for a few months it was a bit dull for my "needs" so I now have a 33BHP (staying that way until the summer) GSX-R600 which although being worse in the speed/acceleration than my old bike it is more fun, it rides a lot easier and I beat my old "haul ass to work because I'm late" time by 2 minutes because it is so much easier to maintain the speed on it around corners than the 500, and it looks/sounds a lot better Mr. Green
Of course I had to change my bike because the other one ran into a little engine difficulty (seizure Crying or Very sad ) but I was glad of the upgrade because it was boring me and falling short of my biking requirements (which may well be different than yours) so in short my advice is get a bigger bike and restrict it.
Of course my route was expensive so maybe don't do as I did but still a larger bike would be my advice.
Although you may be nothing like me whatsoever and therefore it's really up to you and what you want/need and think you will want/need in a year or so.

I'm looking into getting a restricted 500, on a GZ125 at the moment, does the restrictor kit kill it because its only 2 cylinders?

Kill it?

By god no, going from 12bhp to 33bhp on a much bigger bike will make it feel very different and performace, much better. Right enough though, you do get a little used to the performance, a month after restricting. You can always derestrict though, for a longer ride, and put them back in. Lots more acceleration and its only a 30 minute job to take the washers out

If you /really/ don't think you will want to derestrict the bike, go for a 33hp bike (125, or goose/bros400 etc). However 98% of people do want that extra power; including a few that have done the restricted access test when they could have done DAS.

Then he wasn't trying very hard or isn't as skilled as you.
Have you had any work done to the bike. Is that 33hp at the rear wheel?

Its got a arrow exhaust and the pesky lodgic connection in the cdu ripped out but apart from that its standard. It is 33bhp at the back wheel also Very Happy
The boy i raced i've known all my life he's a skilled induvidual when it comes to bikes and he actually taught me how to ride a bike all those years ago..... Very Happy I've only raced him the once and i was shocked to have beaten him! (as was he seeing he tryed real hard to catch me) He is now subsiquently sold his bike to buy a 98 cr 500 red rocket. I wooped the rm but i dont think ill catch that Evil or Very Mad maybe you never know.... (Find a track with a lotta corners... lol)

33bhp is powerfull enough for me, I'm sure I'll get bored of it quickly, but at the moment, it's enough to scare me, as I'm only used to an 11bhp 2t bike.

It cruises happily at 80mph, which is fast enough tbh.

"fast enough"

LOL, deja vu, I think I said that as well as dodsi when we got our er5's.

Now he wants to derestrict his, a month and a bit later, as for me, mine is already derestrcited and is a whole load more fun to ride.

Buy it and restrict it, but never say never to derestricting Wink

I bet that doesn't comply with the law... there is a power to weight ratio element in the law too. I think its something like must not exceed 0.16 kw/kg. 33bhp is approximately 25kw so...

That would mean the minimum weight for the bike (@33bhp) is around 156.25 kilos.

I bet your motard weighs less than that! Smile

I think you might be right there.... Wink What sort of power has the er5 got? I tried to antagonize a black one Evil or Very Mad that lives a few streets away for my house, but the bloke indicated off into a panny street. Next time i though, next time... lol Very Happy
