On the A259 just entering Seaford, Eastbound when I passed it. Had just finished overtaking a slow mover when I spotted it, I slowed but I saw the lady scribbling something as I passed so I have a feeling I've been nabbed. Sad

Keep your eyes peeled guys!

There was a police speed check sign up and 3 people in hi-vis. I didn't see a gun on the way past, but I saw a guy aiming it where I had come from when I came back the other way. I don't know how these things work, do they have to swing the gun around and get a shot of the plate or does someone record the plate number as you go past?

If it was an old biddy it's likely community speedwatch. They wear high vis, use signs and generally pretend to be important. Really they are snivelling dross of humanity, wannabe grasses, uniform fetishists, nonces and curtain twitchers but if they have one of them signs that tells you the speed they flash you at it's great for checking how accurate your speedo is at higher speeds by whizzing past them again and again and again.

As to your numberplate if it's the coppers they need evidence of the plate. Scribbling it in a notebook won't hold up in court.

Hmm I'm fairly sure they were police. Had a police sign and they weren't old fogies. I could feel their eyes burning holes in me, but that could be because I knew that I had been speeding during the overtake... When they got me I might have slowed to below the limit or I might have been mid-overtake, in which case it's probably 6 points and bye bye license! Gonna be an agonising wait...

Seaford has a Speedwatch group
https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/10504432.BMW_seized_after_Seaford_volunteers_abused/
Even if they were police why would you get 6 points? I thought Speedwatch sent out letters not NIPs. What was the limit and how fast were you going?
Three yellow jackets, a sign and a speed gun, poor obs Embarassed
Perhaps you should follow them on twitter https://twitter.com/seafordspeed might save you from the pretend feds in the future.

My sister got one of these letters from a speed watch group in Cambridge for going 38 in a 30. Pretty much said "we saw what you done did... Definitely don't do it again, we have your reg so slow the fack down... Three kittens may or may not of been killed by your actions".

Give the community speed watchers a break!! They provide a useful public service. With their police calibrated speed guns, you blast past them and then a few days later you'll get a letter in the post congratulating you on your vehicles achievement and they're even kind enough to give you the exact reading from the speed gun.

Do it again and they send you another letter this time with lots of red on it where again they tell you your exact speed but the letter also goes on about your vehicle details have been passed to the local traffic cops. That's the time to sell the vehicle locally, I'm nice like that. Mr. Green

Then you buy another vehicle and start the whole process again. With the vehicle registered to the same address, it seems that they don't link your latest speeding feats to what you achieved in your previous vehicle.

I would at least want to see the individual's training and qualification certificate to operate the speed gun. Then I would want the calibration certificate and I would want to make sure it was type approved.

If none of these are forthcoming I would tell them where to get off. It does my nut in when coppers enlist the help of joe public who have no training or qualification!!! Why do we pay for coppers if we can do the job. If you leather a scrote while they try to run off with your bike or car or whatever you've worked hard for you end up in court!!!

Sticky beak fuckers Should stay in and watch antiques roadshow!!!

Why?

The letters they send you are completely meaningless. The OAP's do get some training about how to operate the speed gun, I assume that the speed guns are calibrated but given how meaningless the whole exercise is, it makes no difference to anyone if they've not been calibrated within the same time window that would be required if a cop was using it.

It makes the OAP's happy and the police must think there is some value to it so they're happy so what's the big deal?

The idea of seeing the OAP's qualification certificate to operate the speed gun is daft cos you'd never be in a situation when you'd want to see it. The same with the calibration certificate, you're never going to need to see it.

The vehicle details being passed to traffic plod is also meaningless. All that means is you've got to behave if you're in sight of traffic plod, exactly the same as if your details haven't been passed to them by community speed watchers.

Get over it, OAP's with speed guns are completely harmless. I wouldn't be surprised if your reaction is exactly what the police want; people to think that the community speed watches are a big deal and something that Joe Public should be concerned about.

The coppers could go use the thousands of pounds of equipment to actually catch people breaking the law.

Who cares if old people want to play plod, they should be bowling or kneeling n the foam matts tending the borders.

It's common knowledge that old folk can't judge speed correctly, your even told all the by car/bike instructors, it may even be n the Highway Code/theory test etc( I might have dreamed that bit though).

Then harassing folk because they may have been speeding, sending threatening letters? You've either commited an offence or you havnt!

It's not a good idea and the money could be spent elsewhere to cut speeding if it is a problem!

And yes if you get caught speeding and get a fine or points or whatever it's your fault, nobody else's!

I'm on an A2 license man, it's a sweet bike Wink

And I was just thinking 6 points because if I got snapped at 45 then they consider a summons I think? But from what you guys are saying it could well be neighborhood watch...

Under Sussex Police "operation crackdown" anyone can report any road user they consider to be breaking the law and they'll have a letter reminding them to be good sent to them and it sitting on the PNC for 12 months - regardless of evidence - you just need to be reported by an individual. Nice bit of "community action" Rolling Eyes

I am not a number....
