PostPosted: 08:40 - 18 Feb 2014    Post subject: Flying with Bike Gear? Reply with quote

Hi,

As it goes I'm back in the UK after Oz. Rather than getting an R6 there, for some stupid reason I flew back here and have put down a deposit on a 2002 CBR 600 FS up north.

Since I need to ride it down, could anyone please let me know what the airlines are like with regard to taking biking gear on the plane? Would just be "carry on" with helmet, gloves, jacket, trousers and boots.

Failing all this, what's the best way to pay for a bike you've never seen and have all the paperwork filled out - if I was to use a courier? The bike seems clean, HPI clear and the owner has so far been very straight up. He doesn't trust Paypal though. Just get him to fill in what he can and send it with the bike... and then I'll fill it in and send what's necessary back to him and to the DVLA?

Guess I would have to deposit money straight into his bank account but would this be a huge risk?

Thanks,
Antony.

When I last flew, I wore my leathers, boots etc and carried helmet as hand luggage, wasn't a problem.

Yes you'll have to transfer the money which can be a huge risk, not something I'd do without having met the guy or even seen the bike before.

Can't see a problem with bike gear on the plane, however pay the guy cash once you have seen the bike. Full amount up front would be like waving goodbye to your money for nothing

I've sold blind. I just took the guys details, filled them in on the V5, then took a photo of this and sent it to him before I posted the V5 to the DVLA. I gave the courier that collected the bike the new keepers part of the slip to give the buyer. I also filmed the entire loading of the bike in to the van to cover my arse if the courier damaged anything.

The guy bank transferred me the money before any of the above. He was lucky and I was honest, personally I think he was fucking mad I wouldn't do it.

Better you get the plane up there and see it before you buy.

Thanks for that. Guess I just don't want to board the plane looking like a power ranger! As long as they won't refuse me boarding for some silly reason. Someone said something about gloves being seen as a potential "weapon".

How long is your flight? I wouldn't want to be sat on a plane for hours on end in full bike gear.

Can't you put your gear in a suitcase and carry your helmet as hand luggage? (I wouldn't put my helmet in my suitcase because of the way they fling around your luggage).

Lol, if I was flying Easy Jet or Ryan Air I would wear it. Although would probably be charged extra for wearing my own protection.

It's only an hour or so up to Newcastle, but it would suck wearing it. I also don't want to take up a suitcase that I'll have to leave behind. I could fit my boots, gloves and pants in my small ruck sack but would have to carry the jacket and helmet.

That'd be annoying regarding the Toy Story one. I just flew from Australia and the journey sucks. Almost caused a number of aviation catastrophes along the way with my ereader and personal headphones.

I would say a maximum of 2hours.

In the UK, flying up north...

Depending on who you are travelling with you may not get away with your lid as carry on.

Best measure up the lid in the bag you want to carry it in. Helmets are quite bulky and I'd doubt if it would be ok with the likes of ryanair and easyjet.

Your gear will likely be too heavy for the budget airlines too, so you'll have to wear it.

Obviously if you are willing to pay the extra charges then anything is possible.

I wouldn't but a 2002 bike blind, too many things that could be fooked.

Thumbs Up

Let's do a BCF relay. Person nearest to the bike inspects it and tells the OP to buy or not. Then rides it 1 hour down the motorway, meets BCF nice guy number 2 and gets a pillion ride home. BCF nice guy number 2 rides 2 hours down the motorway. Rinse and repeat, you have a bike and a huge favour list!

I work at an airport and many times have been through security with full gear.

Never an issue.

Lol, would be a good effort until some dozy bugger crashed it. Be like Chinese whispers, I'd get back a 1974 Vespa or something.

It's British Airways I'd be flying with but spose I better call them to double check - not that airline customer service ever give definitive answers. If they're honest they'd say "Basically, it depends on if the person checking you in is a complete cock or not".

Ahh I see, I wasn't sure if you were flying over from Oz to UK or from your home to up north.

Also, if it's only a short flight I would personally wear my full gear and take my helmet as hand luggage, it's only an hour… i'm sure you'll survive the flight with gear on it's just now a matter of finding out if you can actually fly with your gear on Smile

I sweat my ass off at the airport in shorts and t-shirt, let alone dressed as a power ranger! Still, will have to see.

I'd wear my boots and my jacket, put the rest in a rucksack in the hold. Done it plenty of times.

Thanks. Just waiting on a window in the weather when it'll most likely be dry. As for a train, 6 hours on public transport would be enough to drive me to suicide.

Fuck this weather - should have stayed in Oz! Trying to find a day when it'll be mostly clear throughout the UK is an impossible task. Might be better on Saturday but then the winds pick up.

Lol, fair do's. I just remember from last summer my textiles have lost all water proofing and haven't got time to wash them and water proof them again before the trip.

As for Aussie - I'm a South African and who can blame me for loving blue skies. It looks like the set of Bed Knobs and Broomsticks out!
