I think this may be off the scale Laughing

I was wondering why the bike felt so dodgy going over bumps and kept making horrible clattering noises. This would also explain why both wheels stay on the ground when it's up on the centre stand!

I think that may well be the end of this bike. Unless I can score a very cheap Varadero 125 shock from someone off here!

Jesus fcukin wept Moppy, I thought that was something on the underside of a 4x4 that's used for those off road driving experience days.

Haven't you heard of a jet wash Laughing

Hardly f...d, it's the joy of owning a vehicle.

If my shock/silencer whatever went, you have to deal with it.

I sold my stock shock for my Z750 , could have only gone for about £30 or £40, that was for a shock that had never seen rain and only done a couple of thou. Like the above poster says, have a look on ebay, if not get a Hagon or if you're loaded a Öhlins.

I once had blew an engine on a 2 year old car, now that's a f....d cost.

I can see why leaving it dirty can be helpful when fault finding.

'Oh look, I can see metal..that's strange'

or

'That crust on top of that crud is slightly darker..I may have an oil leak'

Just work out what the unladen hole to hole should be and get a fully adjustable upgrade.
Job done.

Re: the hideous state of the bike. I won't name any names, but I've only had this since December, before that it used to belong to a certain forum member here whose name began with P and ended with addy Laughing

To be fair, it's done more than 78K. Unless I can get a shock very (read: VERY) cheap, I don't think it's worth throwing much money at this. Just a shame since I recently put a brand new Motobatt, reg/rec and tyre on it.

Already sent him a message seeing how low he's willing to go.

Considering I have 4K burning a hole in my pocket and my commute may soon involve 20 miles on NSL roads, I'm also considering the idea of getting a new bike.

Dunno whether any money I put into the Varadero will ever come back to me, so still deciding what insultingly low amount I shall make as my offer.

Why not?

The last time I saw it in person, I think it had done about 73K and, apart from a touch of clutch drag, the really expensive bits (engine/gearbox) were in pretty good shape.

Fisty's given you a link to Hagon shock for £135, which seems like a decent price for a good bit of kit, which will probably go another 50K, I bet you could find a good used OE part for less.

Unless it's started clattering it's nuts off, there's no reason not to put a few quid into it.

Try reading the thread.

With the thick end of 80K on the clock, the damage was done well before moppy got his hands on it, less than three months ago; unless he owns a time machine, I doubt there's much he could've done to prolong it's life.

Hi had the same happen to me on my xvs650.

The mono shock completley snapped. I was going to do a complete rebuild anyway so no biggy. Couldn't believe the price of a new shock though so did some hunting around.

I eventually got a load of parts from the U S of A, including the shock for the same price as just the shock from the UK.

I bought my vara for a mix of city and nsl, did a weekend razzing around the peaks on it and it was fine so you might find it does well as a commuter, should be able to find one being broken without too much since 125s get crashed all the time.

Could be worse, could have bought jive bunny's :p

Cheers for the input one and all. Messaged both those guys breaking their Varas.

Shaft, not keen on putting money in because I don't know how much longer before the next thing goes. Gear changes have got pretty horribly jerky, theres the clutch drag you already mentioned and it's going to need a new chain (and therefore sprockets) fairly soon. I do have a complete clutch basket waiting to go on, but dunno how much good thats actually going to do.

Decisions, decisions.

Mine was a bit jerky on gear changes with a chain too loose or too tight
