Embarassed just had a £1 coin in change that was made in 1984 Shocked it was pretty well worn in places but got me wondering how old most of our coins are that are still in circulation, anyone beat 30 years old, I bet that coin has bought a few beers in its travels Laughing

The decimal (present) method of coinage came in Feb 1971 before that it was common to be given coins that were over 100 years old.

I just noticed the other day (when one stuck to the magnet inside my tankbag) that all coins up to 10p in value have now been debased to steel rather than the copper/nickel alloy they used to be.

Before they brought in the new, smaller (nd now steel) 5p and 10p pieces, you used to still get shillings and florins (a 2 shilling piece) in circulation. A shilling was worth 12 old pence and five new pence, both of whioch equated to 1/20th of as pound. I remember using shillings with Edward VII on them when I was at school in the late 1980's.

Well one of my oldest coins is from the 1600's obviously that is not in circulation. Badger is right unfortunately, I do have VF (Very Fine) coins from 1971- present day. Most of the valuable coins are kept at my nans though.

The vending machine where I'm currently working won't actually accept the new 5p's and 10p's.

Check your 50ps for 'Kew Garden' ones, too.

Though, I suspect price will go down now more people know about them.

Talking about money, when I was in Singapore, the notes were plastic rather than paper and the were bloody tough too, I couldn't rip one!

I gather we will be changing to plastic as well.

They have polymer banknotes in Canada now, shopkeepers hate the way they stick together, and unconfirmed reports suggest they melt in heat or become brittle and snap in the cold. I don't mind them.

I have a quarter from 1969 in my wallet right now.

This explains the loss of about 50 low value coins to the one at my work Rolling Eyes Everyone kept reporting it as broken and they couldn't find any faults with it Laughing

Hi

Probably got a few older 1p and 2p pieces in a jar. 20p pieces only came out in the early 1980s and pound coins a couple of years later so no decently old ones of those, while 5p, 10p and 50p pieces have all been replaced with smaller versions in the last decade or 2.

Had plastic bank notes in Aus while we were there. Quite liked them and they survived well when they were put through the washing machine. Got a Northern Ireland plastic note floating around somewhere.

All the best

Keith

Yeah I didn't mind the plastic notes when I was in Aus either. A mate of mine mentioned that the UK might be getting them and he thought it was a daft idea. I couldn't be bothered arguing with him, but to be honest it surely makes far better sense to change to these new durable waterproof ones.

And about coins - At my gran's house there was a little pot of lots of old coins that kind of fascinated me as a kid because I'd never seen them in 'real life' before. Two main ones I remember were a threeppeny bit (no idea what the date may have been for that), and an older one that had the face of King George on it.

Fistys coins are awesome!

I like the plastic notes, Mexico has them in the smaller denominations & it means you can swim up to the pool bar and still give the guy a tip! Theres a company near me took on more employees too because they got the contract to make the plastic Thumbs Up

when shilling and two shilling coins were still being accepted as 5 and 10pence, had a few old ones, used to sell them to the coin shop for 25p and 50p a time.

The coin clippers took all the all silver coins to be replaced with cheap metal coins. Fuck them. A true robbery from the public which goes unchallenged.
