I actually miss riding more than I've missed anything before and I was only on the road about 2 - 3 months.

I wake up everyday dreaming I could ride to work, I get home, dreaming I could ride to wherever I pleased, it bloody kills me.

July I'm getting a bike and as the days go by, they get bloody longer uhg, I need one.. NOW.

I am the absolute WORST at saving money.
I'm on an apprentice wage of £600 a month and can't make myself save any money each month for one.. I'm so bad.

So July I turn 18, get a £200 pay rise and want to finance a bike Sad

You'll get £200 more, and won't save a penny of it. It's not the amount you earn that is the issue, it's the attitude.

Don't worry, it's on finance. You don't need to save...

Exactly my point, it will just automatically come out my bank at the start of the month along with insurance, so when they have been taken, I know how much I have left to play with.

Finance on vehicles = bad idea. You're getting done over on the price of the vehicle, the cost of the credit and interest.

You would be far far far better off putting that £200 in a cash box each month and giving the key to an intimidating (but honest) friend/family member who'll give you the keys back once the target amount has been reached.

Fair point, problem with that though is when I get the extra 200, is just under half a year away and then saving it, I may as well be looking at a bike in 2015 Laughing

What do you have to spend each month to live? Work that out, and then see how much you have left, with that money just remember this. Spend a little save a little. 50/50 works well, you have enough to buy small things you want, and you quite quickly start to save up too.
Doing that you could potentially have a bike by June that you own outright.

and be without a bike for 3 years?

Absolutely nothing wrong with vehicle finance as long as you are ok with paying the payments and are happy with paying more in interest for the convenience of having the vehicle now rather than getting the bus for 3 years until youve saved enough to pay in full.

And actually...you can get some low percent rate finance at the moment so its not always a rip off.

When it gets stolen/written off you will have no money, no transport and an insurance claim on your record.

If they can get past an entry lock, though a double sided thick wood door 2 locks, into a plated alarmed shed with a ground anchor I would let him walk away with it Laughing

My works on private land way at the back, one way in one way out, alot of people around the carpark which is 20ft to the door of my place with windows instead of walls with cctv in the area, I use to thread my chain though the disks too, way less protected but even I don't know a thief dumb enough to attempt it from there.. but yes would be stolen from there, and as for the shops, well.. what do you do? Why has yours not been stolen yet?

that's your left over to save from.

I have an ER5 for £300 I don't care if it gets stolen.

I often left my R6 with no security on it for quite a few years too. I was lucky, plenty of other people aren't so lucky, even with security devices on it.

The point is, if it gets stolen, and it's on finance, you will not get a penny from your insurance company, it will go to the finance company, and you will lose any money you have paid towards it.

Additionally, a used 1year old R125 at the MOST is £2200.

You finance £4300, remember you pay the interest first before the vehicle, so after year 1, you have only paid the interest, not the vehicle.

So that bike gets stolen the year after you buy it, insurance pay out market value of £2200 to the finance company, you still owe the finance company £2100.

You will have to pay them that £2100 back, you will have no transport, you will have an insurance claim to declare.

It's up to you if you want to take that chance.

Who are you paying £200 rent to? A landlord or parents?

So next month you'll be paying out 50% with 50% for yourself. How can you not save?
I'm bad with money if I have nothing to save for, I can't save for the sake of it, but if I'm saving for something I really want it's easy. Everytime you look at those new clothes/games/junk food etc just remember how much you miss riding and saving becomes much easier.

What sort of bike are you looking at getting?

If the price range is somewhat sensible do you have any friends/family that could loan you (part of) the cash rather than getting a finance agreement with a dealer.

You can come to agreement with them to so they get a better rate of return than if the cash was in the bank, yet at the same time you have a lower rate of interest than if you take finance from a bank. win/win situation. You can even set up a standing order to them each month like you would with a "official" finance agreement.

Tbf I personally lend out money to mates for free, not massive sums, but I've lent people the odd 2/300 quid here and there for holidays and such. Never had a problem getting it back and I quite like having people in my pocket: I can't spend it away, and I call it in when I need it. If I'm good enough mates to trust them with my money, they're good enough mates I'd feel like a dick asking them for interest.
