Nice. The tiny window reminds me of a Genesis game called Zero Tolerance which managed a decent frame rate because it scrunched everything down.

Also, Halo for Atari 2600: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdpdkUA69IE

On a somewhat related note, finished Doom 3 again last night. Fun but not amazing, nothing has changed in the ten years since release.

Yup. I was thinking of going back to play Half Life 2 through again. Graphics still look pretty decent.

1994 -> 2004 was a much bigger leap forward.

I finished Quake II the other day.

I like old games, especially those that I couldn't play back then because the HW costed a fortune or I just couldn't get the game. Thumbs Up

My favourite weapon was the gravity gun.

If you don't care about too many mods, the Doom 3 BFG edition (which is what I played, I have the original too) is pretty decent, runs well.

You absolutely need this, though:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/208200/discussions/0/846960628284054865/

It gives the flashlight an hour's battery life, and makes the shotgun into the workhouse that lasts the entire game it should always have been (as per the original Doom)

I'm going to play Resurrection of Evil this afternoon, interested to see how the 'gravity gun' knock-off in that does.

I really enjoyed RoE. Thought it was a bit more like the original doom in that you had to navigate mazes.

The boss at the end was also insanely hard, unlike the cyberdaemon at the end of doom 3.

Oh... is the fucking automap back? Because I ran in circles more than once because on spite of all their wonderful level design, tons of it looked the same as before.

Didn't get around to it today.

No. I thought doom 3 was very linear in that as long as you killed the bad guys opened a door and you moved on. RoE had you do different things. It was mainly about killing the bad guys and opening the right doors, but there were things like moving/crushing walls. Things that you had to think about to get past instead of just running in all guns blazing. Its not a dramatic change but just enough to mix it up slightly.

I still play Doom & DoomII, the nonlinearity allows you to tackle the game in an infinite number of ways. Even after all these years I haven't got bored with it. Every game I played since DoomII got boring after the first couple of plays. I never got past the second level of Final Doom, just too tedious.

My first ever multiplayer gaming experience was on the original Doom on 2 PC's running serial connections. I remember being mesmerised by the experience of playing against my friend but he couldn't see my screen and vice versa.

Duke Nukem 3D kicked off bigtime after Doom in the office at lunchtimes, then Heretic and Shadow "smell remind me of old girlfriend" Warrior. Once we had decent PCs though, Action Quake 2 was the game of choice.

Hate to be a fun sponge, but isn't the game in the video Wolfenstein 3D?

Have you installed the brutal doom mod?

Aside from the executions:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzhvJc6S24Y

It makes it A LOT harder, like when you get ambushed you can die in seconds.

It is doom, in fact Wolfenstein 3D was made by the same team as Doom. I think it was ID software (they made Keen, Quake...). And the original ''Wolfenstein game'' was called ''Castle Wolfenstein'' made by different lads, check this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJNAXh-LVnk Thumbs Up

Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCafnH_eisA Thumbs Up
Very impressive stuff.

What really set Doom apart was the fact that the game was configured from a relatively simple config file - the infamous doom WAD. Once the WAD structure was reverse-engineered literally thousands of alternative Doom WADs were created. Some of them quite staggeringly huge and complex.
