You most definitely do need to lube the chain. I've found WD40 Chain Wax the best myself

Each to their own. I have both a wet sticky oil from Putoline and Wurth dry wax chain oil. Both have their benefits. I prefer the Wurth one but it does make the chain look dry and not oiled.

You are right in using paraffin (kerosene) to clean the chain.

Use a spay on lube, and remember that you only lubing to keep the O-rings/X-rings nice and supple. You're not trying to coat the whole chain in stuff.

Wax and/or grease isn't really the best idea unless you're really anal about keeping you chain fresh and clean as all times. Wax and grease tend to trap dirt and particles and form a paste that actually causes wear to rollers, which represents itself as chain stretch.
