Curious,

Can you ride out of a dealership if you just purchased the bike?
Can you insure it whilst its at the dealership?

I know it's recommended for them to deliver it or a friend, but that's not the question Very Happy

Phone your insurance company at the dealership and add it to your policy?

Also some dealerships throw in free 7 day insurance.

Don't know about bikes, Tom...but when you buy a new car, you have to wait like 3 months while they build it. (manufacturer depending).
Ordered a car from vauxhall in sept, picked it up Christmas eve.

What kind of dealership? Arranging to buy a new BMW from a franchise is different to hauling a 15 year old Thundercat out from the heap at the back of Big Dan's Bikes and Kebabs.

Once it's your vehicle, it's not their problem. Push comes to shove, they don't get the money until the keys are on the table.

I mention this because I bought a car from a dealer who "wouldn't" release it until it had a tax disc on it, and my insurer (back in the day) was playing silly buggers with sending them a certificate. In the event, I told them that it was my car and my risk, so keys, please. Job done.

More recently, the missus' Mummy Bus came with 7 days insurance, and I suspect my BMW might as well, although I'd already sorted my own insurance on both of them before the agreed collection date.

If you find yourself not liking the terms or the convenience, go elsewhere.

For a new bike you have to have insurance for them to register it.
Used, as per the above, I'd tell them where to go if they tried to stop me taking the item I'd just paid for/was about to pay for.

Having just bought a new (second hand) car from a Dealership we "purchased" the car a week before and went back a week later to pick it up - in that week we organised insurance for it and picked it up with insurance.

I fail to see the difficulty.

If you have existing insurance, and it allows the riding of other bikes, doesn't that cover you - since on paper you don't own the bike as its not been processed by the DVLA yet? Or is that wishful thinking?

I agree, sometimes a service and a fresh MOT is arranged before pick up.

Fairly sure, third party cover for other bikes (not owned by yourself) must have insurance on it, for your third party insurance to be used.

"Not proof of ownership" the V5 says.
When you hand the money over, it's your bike.

If you were say to have an extended test couple-of-day ride and leave a deposit which they could keep if you liked it, that might be another matter. (Or, it might not.)

If you're buying new then you / your insurance company have to provide proof of insurance to the dealer before they will allow to you ride the bike away (otherwise they are leaving themselves open to aiding and abetting riding uninsured). The dealer also needs proof of insurance to tax the bike (they can register no probs - they usually have a list of registrations for allocation each month - always nice to ask to see this as there may be one on the list that would be special to you).

If you're buying used from a dealer, proof of insurance is requested for same reasons as above but not always required if you are putting into van rather than riding away (honest guv that's what I'm doing), or if it is delivered to you (rather than you collecting).

Private sales: hand over the cash, do what you like.

I bought new last year. I went to the dealer, chose my bike, filled in the finance forms etc and had to wait a few weeks for delivery of the bike. When I went to collect I had to have insurance so they could sort the tax.

Nobody, they've stopped selling them.

Not really a fair comparison but OK I'll bite. The bandit is really boring. OK as a cheap commuter, it does that well, but who buys a brand new boring 600 for commuting? Or, who buys a brand new bandit for fun? Sure if you need a used, cheap hack knock yourself out but why people spent ££££'s on a new one i'll never understand.

And on the Chinese bike, it serves a purpose. It does ultra cheap commuting better than any 600 would. As for CPOS - the worlds moving on mate....catch up. Thumbs Up

The bandit has more performance than you'll ever be able to get out of it.

Plenty of fun to be had on a bandit 600.
