Which 125CC twist & go scooter should I go for?

Hi there guys and girls,

I'm hoping you can help give me some real, unbiassed genuine review style help and advice (as opposed to the speel and sales talk you get from some/most shops).

I'm kind of new (again) to the world of scooters (having had a Gilera DNA 125 some 12+ years ago, which was a rash spare of the moment impulse buy) and am now looking at getting something simple and reliable to help save me time and money on my approx 15 mile each way commute through a range of country lanes and built-up traffic ridden dual carriageways (currently from Caterham to Kingston).

I am relatively open minded, with a budget of approx £800, and have been looking at 125cc scooters such as the Peugeot Sum-Up, Lexmoto Gladiator, Lexmoto Tornado, Sym Jet, Sinnis Matrix, Skyjet YH 125TF, Sinnis Harrier, Aprilia Sport City Cube, Direct Bike Cobra.

All I will say is that I do not wish to be riding something that resembles a pizza delivery bike.

I ran a JM Star 125 for 6 months.

Well it ran most of the times.
Would recommend that you bought a reliable decent brand.

Have you looked at the piaggio x8 x9s theres abit bigger than your average scooter , so you wontlooklike a chav goin around on one and they give you a bit more road presence being bigger

Oh and dont get a skyjetor any other chinese bike . It will only fall apart on you after a few months.

I would say Honda Pantheon is a good choice.

I'd buy a second-hand Honda or Yamaha if I were you, but beware for that money you'll get a slightly tatty scooter.

If your commute is in London, then you want a fairly small manoeuvrable scooter; I wouldn't go for the X8 or X9, I think they're too big.

There's plenty of Pantheons, Leads etc. on gumtree.

A little bit more budget would get you a PS125 or Cygnus, which I think are better scooters, especially if you're spending more time on 40+ mph roads. Bigger wheels (including the tyre profile) means more stability at slight cost to manoeuvrability.

I rode a Yamaha Vity for a year, cheap to run, reliable, and doesn't look like a chav-mobile.
My commute was about five miles at 40mph, rest was London stop-start, I'd recommend the Vity for that sort of job. Accelerates reasonably well for a 125 scooter and has a realistic top speed of 55-60mph.

honda lead is ideal 100cc rather then 125cc

I think you need another £300 or £400 for a decentish scooter, you could put down £800 as a deposit and get a new one on tick. I looked at the Honda Vision 110 with a grand down, IIRC the repayments were like £30 or £40 a month.

I commuted on a 125cc Kymco Ego for a couple of years. Pretty good bike apart from a dismal headlight.

Depending on how much of your mileage is dual carriageway I'd also look at 250cc scoots.
