my first track day Razz

My mate picked me up in his van Saturday, we drove down to Norfolk (Snetterton), checked in, got some sleep. Got up at 6:30, got to track, met our other mates who were already there and had procured a pit garage.

Set everything up, tyre warmers, tools (I was the only one of us not using tyre warmers - bear in mind it's still March).

First up, noise testing! Everybody passes but me! 105dB on my Yoshimura can... ffs, nowhere to put a baffle either. Had to drill through the exhaust and bolt one in.

So went to the briefing where they told us it's going to be cold on track and some of us are going to come off (always reassuring haha).

Fast group went out first, watched those boys on the pit straight which was cool. After 30 mins it was our turn. First session out was very strange for me, just tanking it with all that space, I wasn't sure if I liked it at first.

Came in, had a chat with one of the lads who let my tyres down a bit (I was running 42psi rear and 36 psi front) because they were starting to wear a bit weirdly and that's too high for track.

The third session out I really started to enjoy it, being able to just hammer the brakes was an awesome feeling before leaning the bike over and follow the corner line at max revs in each gear, such fun!

Wasn't the slowest out there by a long shot but also wasn't the fastest - there were some crazy fast people out there.

Definitely going on another one and would recommend doing it to anybody who is thinking about it!

Also, does anybody know where I might get pictures from the event's photographers?

Sweet. Looks dry - I think you got lucky there cos it was wet in a lot of the country yesterday.

It was dry as you could hope for. The pictures don't do it justice - direct sunshine at times as well. Really nice day and lucky as you say, I wasn't looking forward to doing it in the wet/damp!

Really grippy, the tyres were nice and hot when they came in.

Which track and organiser was it?

With those 2, it's usually quite easy to find who the event photographer was.

It gets expensive now.

Also, looks like a bit of cold tear on your tyre.

I dunno what it is with that model of GSXR 750, the big tail always does it for me.

I guess..

Really want to give it a go at getting into track days, your attempts inspired me but i'm still a bit hesitant for fear of ditching and trashing the bike Shifty really can't afford to smash it up if things go tits up Laughing

If you end up coming down on a weekend that is overly dry, you can take the Thundercat round Lydden hill if the days are free and MC trackdays are on. Binning it is a bonus.

Not been on one but I am hoping to eventually!

First time I ever watched some mates do it, I thought the novice group was pretty quick.

Then the fast lads went out and I thought they were suicidal! All bunching up on the pit straight then fanning out and diving into the first corner at Oulton park!

Tempting Wink will definately have to work out how much I will owe you if I do make a mess of things somehow though - don't want the guilt of that looming over me Laughing

Likely i'll be slowing everyone up going over cautiously if anything I expect, but you never know Laughing Will have to go in 'exceptionally cautious' beginner group..

£300 track hack which will have home made fibreglass fairings after a while, so infinite backup panels for mega cheap.

Its engine covers I'm more concerned about but nah, ride it with pride Laughing

You sound like me Laughing I'm pretty quick on the road and can keep up with lads who race etc but get me on a track and everyone's overtaking me because I'm a fanny!

Expect i'll be in the same boat for a while when I do get round to it.

Just unsure of how i'll adjust to having wide open areas and people flying up the left and right side of me, bit easier to know when and where people are coming up on you on the road if they do overtake - having no clear lane to stick in and a wide track ahead I expect will make me unsure of where the hell to position myself to start off with Laughing

Depends how much slower you are, I found I could just about hear them coming. If I had my standard exhaust on I'd definitely have heard them from a mile off Laughing

From the couple of track days I've done you could go at walking pace if you want to there's no obligation to ride out of your comfort zone.

I've also made the mistake of buying an Avon "Ditchfinder" as a rear tyre... never again.
